Set in 1982, Glitter tells the story of Billie Frank (Mariah Carey) whose drug and alcohol addicted mother loses custody of her when she was 10 years old. Billie grows up in a foster home in one of the toughest neighborhoods in NYC, where she meets an influential young DJ with whom she pursues her dream of becoming a singer. With GLITTER, pop diva Mariah Carey shows that she has more to offer the world than just a beautiful singing voice. Carey plays Billie Frank, a shy, young mixed-race girl who is sent away by her alcoholic mother at a very early age. At an orphanage, she befriends Louise (Da Brat) and Roxanne (Tia Texada), with the help of her cuddly cat. Flash forward to 1983. Billie and her friends are spotted by a record producer, Timothy Walker (Terrence Howard), who wants them to sing backup for his latest pop-music discovery. But when super DJ Dice (Max Beesley) hears Billie's incredible voice, he makes a shady deal with Timothy to get her out of that dead-end situation. Soon, Billie and Dice are making hits inside the studio, and falling in love outside of it. Eventually, the pressure of her newfound celebrity puts too heavy a strain on Billie, forcing her to decide what it is she really wants from Dice, and what she wants for herself.  World's best? Not even!
Let me begin by admitting I am not in the target demographic for this picture, that is, I am not a teenage girl. SOOOO not a teenage girl. I'm not a fan of Carey's singing, finding it slightly preferable to the sound of goose farts. With that in mind, I'm happy to announce her acting is every bit as good. The high points of this film? Let's see, script? Nope. Acting? Negative. Direction? Uh,uh. Fact is, it's just a bad movie. The only way for an adult to enjoy this, is to make fun of it, either by Rifftrax, or roll your own. I suspect even Mariah's fans will look back and say "I can't believe I used to like that movie."

This movie is a drama that is the best movie in the world! It was a good choice to pick mariah carey because she has the best voice ever. I wisk that I could meet her but I know that that is practicly impossible for me. that is only my dream. but I think that you should buy this movie as soon as you can.

It wasn't supposed to be this way. Mariah Carey's first album for Virgin Records was supposed to be a triumph, an album that confirmed her status as pop's reigning diva, while serving as the soundtrack to a film that proved her crossover status was every bit as potent as that of her unexpected arch-rival Jennifer Lopez. Instead, Glitter proved to be an utter meltdown -- the pop equivalent of Chernobyl. It's hard not to sympathize with everybody involved, actually, from Mariah herself, to all the musicians and producers involved in this and the film, plus the label that shelled out millions of dollars for a proven quantity that suddenly stopped delivering the goods.
