Tobias Thomas Fur Dich CD (2000)
Child of the Ghetto buy CD music Tobias Thomas' mix navigates through the experimental sounds of down-tempo European minimal techno with an emphasis on the tracks similar in style to that of Kompakt. Of course, anyone familiar with Kompakt knows that these aren't your traditional dancefloor sounds, but rather a complex strain of techno more likely to induce cerebral contemplation than body jacking. In fact, this is the main dilemma faced by Thomas on this mix: how to make such quirky techno fit into the utilitarian confines of a traditional DJ set. No one is arguing that his tracks aren't engaging, with Vladislav Delay's mammoth "Huone" and Various Artists' "Autechre Rmx" being obvious highlights; there are few dull songs here, making Thomas' choice to let the tracks play a wise choice. In the end, whether or not this mix inspires booty shakin' probably isn't the most important point -- though there are some quite undeniably funky moments, such as Nick Holder's "Sometimes I'm Blue" -- but rather the fact that the songs quickly engage you with their uncanny characteristics and, above all, the fact that Thomas' mixes flow seamlessly from one whimsical rhythm ...

Chuckii Booker Niice 'N Wiild CD (1992)
Child of the Ghetto songs Chuckii Booker is chasing black lovermen such as Luther Vandross and Michael Jackson, putting major emphasis on the bass drum (well, it would be a bass drum if everything weren't programmed), and singing in an emotive tenor. Dancefloors and boudoirs are given equal emphasis in the tempos. An experienced session man, Booker knows most black styles of the last 25 years and presents them efficiently (in the album's second half, he even throws in some George Clinton-like funk and a copy of James Brown, complete with shouts of "JB's!"), the exception being rap/hip-hop, which he ignores. In those long stretches when his predecessors are between albums, there is plenty of room for him to sneak in with an acceptable substitute like the number one hit "Games." But nothing about his second album suggests he would be any real competition head to head. ~ William Ruhlmann
Recorded at Aire L.A. Studios, Glendale, California; Encore Studios, Burbank, California.
Personnel: Chuckii Booker (vocals, various instruments); Thomas Organ, David Barry (guitar); Gerald Albright (saxophone); Jasiin B. (keyboard); Derek "D.O.A." Allen (bass); Tim "Timbali" Cornwell (percussion); Jackee McGhee, C.J. Anthony (background vocals).

Roha Band Roha Band: Tour 1990 CD (1996)
Child of the Ghetto album for sale When the Ibex Band disbanded in 1979, three of its members - Selam Seyoum, Giovanni Rico and Fekadu Amdemeskel - joined with Dawit Yifru, keyboard player for the also recently disbanded Dahlak Band, to form the now-legendary Roha Band. Specializing in modern Ethiopian music with a traditional blend, the band's first contract was with the Addis Ababa Hilton, where they performed together six days a week, perfecting their signature sound. The Roha Band traveled extensively, in Ethiopia and abroad, and performed on Ethiopian television. They made over 250 recordings with a multitude of celebrated Ethiopian singers, including Aster Aweke, Tilahun Gessesse, Mahmoud Ahmed, Muluken Mellesse, Theodros Tadesse, Hamelmal Abate and Neway Debebe. Although the band broke up in 1994, with the members pursuing individual interests, no other Ethiopian group has matched the number or quality of their recordings.
Composed of veteran Ethiopian instrumentalists who cut their teeth in such noted outfits as the Ibex Band and the Dahlak Band, the Roha Band perform a brand of Ethiopian popular music that will be instantly recognizable to fans of Buda Musique's critically acclaimed ETHIOPIQUES series. On TOUR 1990 the Roha Band update the sinuous melodies and complex arrangements of classic Ethiopian forms like Tigrigna and Tezeta with contemporary instrumentation and production techniques.
Roha Band: Neway Debebe, Hamelmal Abate, Berhane Haile (vocals); Selam Syoum (guitar); Yonas Degefe, Yared Tefera (saxophone); Dawit Yifru (keyboards); Giovanni Rico Bonsignori (bass guitar); Ashenafi Awel (drums).
