Music Of The Sun
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos. Personnel: Jim Messina (vocals, guitar, bass); Richie Furay (vocals, guitar); Paul Cotton (vocals, guitar); Rusty Young (vocals, pedal steel guitar, dobro, banjo); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass); Timothy Schmit (vocals, bass); George Grantham (vocals, drums). Producers: Jim Messina, Steve Cropper, Poco, Jack Richardson, Jim Mason. CD Compilation produced by Bob Irwin. This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. ...

| | Chris Standring Hip Sway CD (2000)
Music Of The Sun
$9.69 2nd Rel;Smooth Jazz;Guests Richard Elliot
Personnel: Chris Standring (acoustic & electric guitars); Rodney Lee (keyboards, programming); Dino Soldo (tenor saxophone, harmonica); Richard Elliot, Derrick Edmondson (tenor saxophone); Tony Guererro (trumpet, flugelhorn); Stan Sargent (acoustic bass); John Menzano, Andre Berry (bass); David Karasony (drums). Recorded at Innocent Bystander Studios, Los Angeles, California between 1998 and 1999. Personnel: Chris Standring (guitar); Dino Soldo, Richard Elliot (tenor saxophone); Tony Guerrero (trumpet, flugelhorn); Rodney Lee (keyboards, programming); Stan Sargeant (acoustic bass). Recording information: Innocent Bystander Studio, Los Angeles, CA (1998-1999). British electric guitarist Chris Standring launched his Stateside career playing edgy fusion in Los Angeles clubs, but he came upon a better path for himself when he met keyboardist Rodney Lee while touring with pop singer Lauren Christy. Blending Standring's bebop nurturing and Charlie Parker/Wes Montgomery influences with Lee's heavy R&B leanings, the two released the dual acid jazz dual Solar System in 1996. Finally confident of where he was headed, Standring found his footing on Velvet and comes into his own by on the far funkier, thickly blues-based and more self-assured Hip Sway (Instinct Records). Even without the ultra-cool poses and sharp, bleeding image cover photography of Kimo Easterwood, Hip Sway beautifully invokes a sense of old-school jazz sensibilities mixed with the acid-jazz ambience and powerful soul of co-producer Lee. The title track finds Standring echoing his muted Wes-bound melody with wah-wah punch lines, then ...

| | Walt Dickerson Visions CD (1978) (Import) Germany
Music Of The Sun
$17.95 A largely overlooked duo improv date recorded on July 11, 1978, by the Danish jazz impresario Nils Winther, Visions matches Walt Dickerson's cool vibes with Sun Ra's idiosyncratic piano in a way that shows both men's contrasting styles to surprisingly cohesive effect. This was not the first time Dickerson and Ra had recorded together; producer Tom Wilson had used the duo on the soundtrack of the 1966 film Impressions on a Patch of Blue. This was their first extended series of duo improvs, however, and each seems to know exactly when to let the other hog the spotlight for a while, as during the moment toward the end of the opening "Astro," when Dickerson lays out and lets Ra launch into ...
