Free emerged from the British blues boom with a tight, muscular style that framed Paul Rodgers' throaty voice. Guitarist Paul Kossoff provides the perfect foil with incisive, measured solos exemplified by his contribution to "All Right Now." This successful single transformed the group from club to festival status. Free's unhurried, careful intensity is captured perfectly on the album's title track and "Oh I Wept," two songs charged with emotion. Where many contemporaries tended towards excess, Free implied a resonant power, particularly through Andy Fraser's liquid bass work, which weaves between the melody lines, rather than asserting them. FIRE AND WATER is a high spot in heavy rock; rather than merely asserting masculine qualities, this album also shows a rare vulnerability.
Remastered and expanded with 6 bonus tracks. Includes alternate take of 'Oh How I Wept', new stereo version of 'Fire and Water', the 'Songs of Yesterday' version of 'All Right Now' and more. 12 tracks
Digitally remastered German issue features six bonus tracks.Q (12/01, p.157) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The definitive Free album - rock has rarely been better..." Uncut (p.97) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] mix of the mercantile and mercurial....FIRE & WATER captures the band at their best..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.121) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Paul Kossoff's guitar is a feral thing of slow-fermenting passion." Record Collector (magazine) (p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "1970's FIRE & WATER was Free's third album, showing their stripped-down blues-rock honed to understated perfection." Fire & Water Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) "I'm still weeping" This is probably my least favorite FREE album, although it contains two of my favorite FREE songs. Oh I Wept & Don't Say You Love Me. I haven't heard the extra cuts yet. All you really need is one version of "All Right Now" to last a life time, which would be the live version. I do really like the cover, a classic FREE pose. Kossoff looking all wasted as usual, bless his heart. I simply love everything my this band as you can tell. Once againg thanks for the tickle. oh so wrong of me Boy was I a fool. Until I got this EU remaster, I hadn't realized what a gem this LP is. The lead guitar breaks in Remember & Heavy Load should astonish any decent guitarist. The 1st version of All Right Now is very interesting as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed these CD's. Thanks CD Universe once again. Sell your old CD's & get these. Two years ago they were all $22 on Amazon. Submitted by bill key (Rogers, AR USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
As Timeless as Fire and Water Of the albums that were released in the late 1960's and early 1970's, few have remained as fresh and as potent as they seemed when they were new. "Fire and Water" is a timeless exception to the rule. You don't have to be "in the mood" to listen to these songs. They grab you and pull you into their mood. This CD contains the hit that got everyone's attention ("All Right Now"), but that's just one facet on this diamond. And, like a diamond, Free's "Fire and Water" will sparkle forever. very influential I got this album first as a freebee from an antique shop. The copy was big-time warped, but I could still hear "the voice" and "the guitar". Since then I have obtained every Free/BC CDs that exist. This album is quite simply one of the best records ever made. Kosoff and Rodgers at their best. God only knows what could have been if Kosoff would have stuck around. His guitar work gives me chills. Anyway - I digress. Enjoy this if you like soulful rock. This album by rockers Free features 15 remastered tracks, including "Catch a Train" and "Travelling Man."
Following Paul Rodgers' unsuccessful project titled Peace and Andy Fraser's ill-fated Toby, Free rebuilt themselves and released Free at Last in the summer of 1972. The band went right back to what they know best, with Rodgers bearing his blues-rock soul to Kossof's moody electric guitar. Tracks like "Sail On," "Soldier Boy," and "Travelling Man" come out on top as some of the band's most emotive material, proving that their breakup in 1971 had no real effect on their chemistry. ...
| | Free Highway CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Fire & Water album
$9.19 This remastered version of Free's classic rock album HIGHWAY includes six bonus tracks.
The last and least of the original Free studio albums, Highway was recorded just three months after the band scored the career-redefining hit "Alright Now," with their profile at an career-topping high, but morale heading toward an all-time low. Guitarist Paul Kossoff was reeling from the death of friend Jimi Hendrix, a new single, "The Stealer" -- the follow-up to The Hit -- bellyflopped ignominiously and, when the album followed suit, the band itself was not far behind. Heavily influenced by their admiration of the Band, Highway ...
| | Blind Lemon Jefferson Complete Recorded Works Vol. 2 (1927) CD (1994)
Fire & Water CD music
$13.25 Volume two of Document's near-complete recorded works of Blind Lemon Jefferson presents 22 sides waxed for Okeh and Paramount during a seven month period between March and October 1927. On tracks six, nine, and ten he is accompanied by pianist George Perkins, and this adds another dimension to an artist who was almost always heard by his lonesome. Lemon's adept handling of the guitar and his disarmingly expressive voice account for the fact that some folks fall in love with his distinctive sound after hearing him sing two or three tunes. For this reason, truly devoted listeners will regard three decidedly different versions of the "Match Box Blues" as a burst of good fortune rather than something esoteric intended only for musicologists. ...

$6.65 Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Mastering Studios East, Edison, New Jersey).
East met West for 1985's action-packed The Last Dragon (or Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon, depending on how you want to look at it), a vehicle for Gordy's Motown label that employed Vanity in a lead role as popular veejay Laura Charles, the object of affection for Taimak's talented martial arts hero character Leroy (or "Bruce Leroy," as he was respectfully referred to). By no means is the movie a classic, and neither is the Motown-heavy soundtrack. You'd be missing ...
