Every time Love And Rockets released a new record during the 1980's they were reminded they lived under not only under the shadow of their previous band, Bauhaus, but also with the presence of that band's ex-frontman Peter Murphy, with whose solo career they found themselves in direct competition. Fortunately, by EXPRESS, the band had finally come into their own. Sounding something like a Goth version of T. Rex (guitarist Daniel Ash somewhat resembled Marc Bolan), EXPRESS is a hook-fest from beginning to end.
The album is probably best known for its kinetic cover of "Ball of Confusion," which charted in England and America, but contains any number of gems. However the real stunner here is "Kundalini Express," which builds and builds until the listener has reached, if not Nirvana, at least the Pixies. From the glam rock of "All in My Mind," to the, uh, glam rock of "It Could Be Sunshine," Love and Rockets took and retooled the power riffs of the '70s, largely thanks to programming/drumming wiz Kevin Haskins. A consistently powerful record by one of the best bands of the '80s.
Rich in sonic detail, the neo-psychedelic Express offers a listening experience like no other album -- guitars spiral to dizzying heights from beds of sound, arrangements swirl, songs change and mutate. "Kundalini Express" typifies Love and Rockets' approach, chugging along for several verses before breaking open and ascending into the heavens; Anglo-fied Eastern religious imagery and philosophy predominate lyrically, and in tandem with the psychedelic music, offer an almost quasi-religious experience. John A. Rivers (who also co-produced Love and Rockets' first album) outdoes himself with the sound on this disc, offering a huge, unique canvas for the band to paint its sound on: Crystalline acoustic guitars cut through thick, distorted tones, and the bass is an equal player to the guitars and drums. "Yin and Yang (The Flower Pot Man)" is ecstatically upbeat, offering a propulsive rhythm, flailing guitars, and insistent bass -- a compulsively danceable and bliss-inducing track. "An American Dream," meanwhile, is an anthem of sorts, with distinct sections setting apart the moods of hope, disillusionment, and acceptance. ~ Jonathan Ball

EVERYTHING! is right; it almost seems as though they picked through Daniel Ash's garbage for this puppy. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, as Ash probably throws out more good songs than most people write. Formed from the ashes of Bauhaus and featuring the above-mentioned guitarist, Tones ...
| | Love And Rockets Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven CDs (1985) Remastered
Express CD music
$9.99 Digitally remastered by John A. Rivers (1999, Woodbine Studios).
Though the years have deadened its impact somewhat, there is still a visceral thrill to be drawn from replaying the first Love and Rockets album, a sense of the first step taken towards a brave new world, and a miasmic whirl of psychedelic intent that masks intents even darker than the preceding Bauhaus ever envisioned. Recorded and released in 1985, riding to club acclaim on the back of the "Ball of Confusion" remake, and aligning its makers with a destiny and fame that no one could ever have predicted, Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven ranks among the most deceptive debut albums of the 1980s. The keys to the album remain the same, of course -- the churning guitar soup of "The Dog-End of a Day Gone By," the sibilant glam sexuality of the title track, the chilling nursery rhyme ...

When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock songwriters in the business. Not only ...

| | Rob Hotchkiss Midnight Ghost CD (2004)
Express album
$15.19 MIDNIGHT GHOST is the solo offering by TRAIN's ROB HOTCHKISS. The former lead singer of L.A.-based APOSTLES, Hotchkiss subsequently met Pat Monahan, and the two of them formed TRAIN in the mid-90's. After three records, which have sold a combined 5 million copies worldwide and put a Grammy on Hotchkiss' mantle (for "Drops Of Jupiter" - which won Best Rock Song of 2001), not to mention performances on David Letterman, Jay Leno, etc. - and touring with the likes of Matchbox 20, Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, and Aerosmith - Hotchkiss has gone off on his own to create, in his words, "the record I've always wanted to make. Finally something I can be one hundred percent proud of!"MIDNIGHT GHOST was produced by Hotchkiss and Jerry Becker - with the help of Tom Schick (whose engineering credits include BOB DYLAN, RYAN ADAMS, and SHAWN COLVIN). It was recorded at The River House in Southern Washington, with drummer Steve Bowman (the original drummer for COUNTING CROWS), with one track recorded by current Counting Crow, Dave Bryson. "It's impossible to explain,' says Hotchkiss, 'just how magical the whole experience was!" The best way for someone else to understand what he's getting at would be to experience the record. "I'm most proud when I hear people say that it's a RECORD, not just a collection of songs!" Though not a concept record, it's come to be considered a record you'll want to put back on once it's finished. "For me there're only a handful of records I'd put in that category! That's the biggest compliment I can get!" beams Hotchkiss. Having given up the gruelling ten-months-out-of-the-year touring schedule he had with Train, Hotchkiss has settled down in the Northwest to be able to spend more time with his family, and to "spend more time MAKING music, and less time PEDDLING music!" That being said, Hotchkiss does consider getting out of the house to do some select live shows. Since we're counting on word-of-mouth to propel this record (MIDNIGHT GHOST will only be available ...
