Personnel includes: Ted Nugent (vocals, guitar, 6-string bass); Dave Kiswiney (vocals, bass); Carmine Appice (vocals, drums); Derek St. Holmes (vocals); Donnie Backus (piano).
Recorded at Pasha Music House, Hollywood, California between February and April 1982 and at A2 Studio, Ann Arbor, Michigan in March 1982. Includes liner notes by Gary Graff and Ted Nugent.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
The 1982 release of Ted Nugent's second self-titled release ushered in a new era for the Motor City Madman. With his relationship with Epic having run its course, the Nuge signed a deal with Atlantic Records. From the album's black-and-white sleeve to a reunion of sorts with the undervalued, underappreciated Derek St. Holmes, Nugent made it evident that for all intensive purposes, this album was meant to be a "return to basics." Producing the record himself, Nugent surrounded himself with an ace band that included Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart drummer Carmine Appice as well as Pat Travers and longtime Nugent bass player Dave Kiswiney. Kicking off with the classic Nuge rocker "No, No, No" and "Bound and Gagged," Nugent gets off to a strong start. Unfortunately, things quickly deteriorate from there. The tracks that follow tend to run from the mediocre "Fightin' Words" to the just plain awful, like "We're Gonna Rock Tonight." On a positive note, the album's compact production has not only aged well, it has proved to be Nugent's only relevant sounding record of the '80s. For hardcore Nugent fans only. ~ John Franck
Ted Nugent welcomed his original singer and rhythm guitarist, Derek St. Holmes, back into the fold after a four year absence for the Nuge's debut recording for the Atlantic label--1982's NUGENT. The album would signal a musical change for Nugent, as he spent the remainder of the '80s reinventing his style as pop-metal, trying to keep in step with such then-current bands as Van Halen and Motley Crue--two groups he had influenced in the first place. While the return of St. Holmes doesn't exactly signal another testosterone metal masterpieces a la CAT SCRATCH FEVER, NUGENT does include such standout rockers as "Tailgunner," "Bound and Gagged," and "Habitual Offender."

Whitesnake Slide It In CD  (1984)

Nugent
CD $6.59  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Personnel: Mel Galley (vocals, guitar); David Coverdale (vocals, piano, percussion); John Sykes, Micky Moody (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Cozy Powell (drums); Fabulosa Brothers (background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Keith Olsen.
Photographer: Jurgen Reisch.
Following up the splendid Saints & Sinners album was no easy task, but 1984's Slide It In turned out to be an even greater triumph for David Coverdale's Whitesnake. From the boisterous machismo of "Spit It Out" and "All or Nothing" to the resigned despair of "Gambler" and "Standing in the Shadow," and the embarrassingly silly title track, everything seems to click. For hit singles, look no further than the twin guitar attack of "Guilty of Love" and the sheer poetry and emotion of "Love Ain't No Stranger," one of the decade's greatest power ballads, bar none. Not to be outdone, "Slow an' Easy" is a masterpiece of sexual tension and the kind of power-blues which no one does as well as Whitesnake. On a quirky historical note, Coverdale fired most of the band soon after the album's release, replacing them with younger, prettier faces with which to better conquer America. For that purpose, Geffen Records even released a re-recorded version of Slide It In with flashy soloing from new guitarist John Sykes, sparking an ongoing debate as to which version is better. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
1984's SLIDE IT IN was the first album that showed that Whitesnake was truly attempting to make it big in the U.S. Its sound was becoming more radio-friendly, but still retained the biting hard rock edge present on its earlier albums--new guitarist John Sykes also proved to be the perfect foil for ex-Deep Purple frontman David Coverdale.
The set features such boisterous rockers as the album-opening title track, the grinding "Slow an' Easy," and the melodic "Love Ain't No Stranger." Although there was a 3-year break after SLIDE IT IN (during which Sykes would leave the band), the album set the stage perfectly for Whitesnake's epo

Whitesnake: David Coverdale (vocals); Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden (guitar); Hinkley, Roger Glover (piano, organ); Neil Murray, Alan Spenner (bass); Dave Dowle, Tony Newman (drums).
Additional personnel: Graham Preskett (violin); Lee Brilleaux (harmonica); Pete Solley (keyboards); Liza Strike, Irene Chanter, Doreen Chanter (background vocals).
Recorded at Central Recorders and Air Studios, London, England in 1977 & 1978.
Snakebite barely qualifies as a Whitesnake album. Vocalist David Coverdale had just assembled the band, and in fact, half of the songs contained here had been recorded by the singer nearly a year before for an abandoned solo outing. With this in mind, one can understand why most of the cuts either suffer from a lack of creative direction, the players' limited musical interaction, or both. Of the tracks credited to Whitesnake the band, the best results are achieved on the rollicking "Come On" and the bluesy "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City," the latter eventually being their first hit. And while more cohesive amongst themselves, the Coverdale solo tracks will hardly interest any but the most die-hard fanatics. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Quill Voodoo Caravan CD  (2002)

CD $16.29  5 stars Audio Samples
The third full-length album for the Swedish band delivers fresh rock of the best quality, somewhere on the border between Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Guns & Roses, Deep Purple & stoner rock with killer vocals & crushing riffs. Steamhammer. 2002. The Quill: Magnus Ekwall (vocals); Christian Carlsson (guitar); Roger Nilsson (bass); Jolle Atlagic (drums).
Additional personnel: Michael Amott (guitar); P-O Nilsson (keyboards); Jamie Solozar (percussion).
Recorded at Berno Paulsson Studio, Malmoe, Sweden between April & June 2001.
The Quill is a Swedish hard rock/metal act that combines the best of classic hard rock with alternative and metal. The group's influences come from across the spectrum, but some show up more obviously than others. First, it is easy to spot Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Give a listen to "Sell No Soul" for a quick example of those. They also chart into Led Zeppelin territory. Check out "(Wade Across) The Mighty River" and think Led Zeppelin III. All their influences are not so old-school, though. Indeed, tracks like "Until Earth Is Bitter Gone" showcase a Soundgarden sort of texture and "Overlord" screams Corrosion of Conformity. The group is being billed as "stoner rock," and it does exhibit healthy doses of that variant of the jam band sound, but that is certainly not the whole picture. The Hammond B-3 organ lends a great retro texture to this release, but much of the power and magic of the group comes from the incredible vocal talents of Magnus Ekvall, who really pulls it all together with style. It is not often that a band of this genre is elevated to greatness by the singing (Judas Priest comes to mind), but that is definitely the case with this one. The album shows a versatility and mastery of both songwriting and arranging that are not present in much hard rock these days. Let's hope these guys stay true and rocking for a long time, because they may become the hard rock legends of this era on which future bands are based. ~ Ga

yes, it's a bold statement, but one that swedish four-piece the quill is not afraid of making. based out of the coastal town of m”nster†s those guys have payed their dues and then some. the core members - vocalist magnus ekwall, guitarist christian carlsson and drummer jolle atlagic - have been playing together since the early nineties. the band eventually became the quill and in 1995 released its self-titled debut, to much critical acclaim. for the fifth album - the third for spv/steamhammer - the quill decided to record in area 51 studios in celle, germany, using the skills of acclaimed producer tommy newton (ufo, helloween, victory etc.). sound-wise, the intention was to go for clarity and a less is more approach. with the music, the quill wanted to write straight-forward songs. that sometimes meant using ideas that previously might have been thrown away, deemed too "obvious". the result is a revelation. "in triumph" charges out of the speakers and rocks with new-found conviction. after a psychedelic build-up, opener "keep the circle whole" challenges audioslave for groove power and a song like "trespass" just might be the most ass-kicking tune the quill have recorded so far. not sacrificing its grandeur, the band excels in "black", an eastern flavoured epic that brings both led zeppelin and deep purple to mind. it's one of the highlights of an album that's sure to expand the "classic the quill songs" catalogue. steamhammer. 2006 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
The Quill: Magnus Ekwall (vocals); Christian Carlsson (guitars); Robert Triches (electric bass); Jolle Atlagic (drums).
Remember in the late '80s, when Led Zeppelin clones were at a premium (Kingdom Come, Bonham, etc.)? Well, although the Quill isn't as instantly smirk-inducing as some of the aforementioned bands, they definitely have studied their Zeppelin and other '70s-era classic rock records, as evidenced by their 2006 release In

Brian Auger's Oblivion Express: Brian Auger (organ, piano, electric piano, Moog, Mellotron, vocals); Jack Mills (guitar); Barry Dean (bass); Godfrey MacLean (drums, cowbell); Lennox Laington (congas).
Recorded at CBS Studios, London, England in March 1973.
All songs written or co-written by Brian Auger except "Compared To What" (McDaniels) and "Inner City Blues" (Marvin Gaye).
The strongest studio recording by Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, Closer to It! is Auger's classic. Featuring his best-known composition, "Happiness Is Just Around the Bend," this album soars on the strength of Auger's multiple keyboard attack. Auger himself takes the lead vocal slot for the first time here, and though he relies on multi-tracking to fill out his sound, his vocals fit the music better than former (and later to return) vocalist Alex Ligertwood's did. Side two features covers of jazz classic "Compared to What" and Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues," both of which add new depth to the original compositions. Lennox Laington's congas give the music a Santana-type of feel, and the whole album percolates from beginning to end. ~ Jim Newsom Additional Tracks

Audio Mixers: Pat Regan; Phil Kaffel.
Legendary journeyman hard rock drummer Carmine Appice has always surrounded himself with great musicians, from Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart to his bandmates in Cactus and Vanilla Fudge. His Guitar Zeus project goes one step further, pairing a core band with many of the most dynamic axe-slingers in rock and metal. CONQUERING HEROES collects the best of GUITAR ZEUS (1996) and GUITAR ZEUS VOL. 2: CHANNEL MIND RADIO (1997), along with a sprinkling of bonus tracks, in one convenient double-disc package. Among the legendary six-stringers who join Appice, fretless bass monster Tony Franklin (ex-the Firm), and singer Kelly Keeling (Blue Murder) are Brian May, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers, Yngwie Malmsteen, and even tennis star John McEnroe. Surprisingly, considering the stylistic diversity of those involved, both discs are very consistent, with the participants sounding more like a real band than a collection of guests. The rhythm section sound of Appice's pounding, locomotive drums and Franklin's overdriven, serpentine bass ties together the disparate tracks, which recall a host of classic rock standard-bearers including the Beatles ("Gonna Rain"), Van Halen ("4 Miles High"), and Mountain ("Nobody Knew").

This is a 20-minute video containing four songs from the Radio K.A.O.S. album: "Radio Waves," "Sunset Strip," "Four Minutes," and "The Tide Is Turning." Most of it takes place in the recording studio. ~ William Ruhlmann
Roger Waters' second solo album is yet another conceptual narrative, one that tells the tale of a wheelchair-bound boy who tries to halt the threat of nuclear war through his use of the HAM radio. The story line isn't held together as tightly as his first album, and the whole fable seems a little too far fetched, even when taken lightly. Unlike The Pros and Cons album, the music here overrides the narrative, but not by much, highlighted by the upbeat pop single "Radio Waves." The last tune, entitled "The Tide Is Turning," is the only other focal point of the album, an honest-sounding ballad that relinquishes a glimmer of hope in an otherwise unpromising world. Waters' anti-war theme is stretched full across the album, but the music itself struggles to capture any attention, bogged down by half-whispers and flat-lined melodies that are only slightly resuscitated from time to time with some trumpet and saxophone. The novelty of Los Angeles disc jockey Jim Ladd wears off quickly, as he was obviously used to add some lightheartedness to the album's pessimistic undertones. Waters' use of imagery and thematic depth are absent from Radio K.A.O.S., leaving his superficial spiel with barely any sustenance, which in turn hinders the moral of the album so that it fails to reach its fruition. While both The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking and Amused to Death convey his talented use of concept, imagination, and lyrical mastery, this album seems to be nothing more than a fictional tale with a blatantly apparent message. ~ Mike DeGagne

CD $13.39  5 stars
The release of the band's acoustic record, "Acoustics" marks the beginning of a new sound for Floater. Fans of Floater's electric shows will definitely appreciate the raw emotion captured in this release. The album was recorded and produced with D.A.X. at Leialohapomaikai'nani Studios in Tacoma, Washington. Moving into a hardwood ballroom that had been converted into a studio, the group worked to make the album without digital editing to capture the fresh, live feeling of the bands natural acoustic sound.
In The Mix: The Sound Of The Fifth Season
Sven Vath In The Mix: The Sound Of The Fifth Season CD  (2005)

Nugent
CD $19.19
It's been five years since techno overlord Sven Väth ascended the shores of party mecca Ibiza on a mission to conquer the small island. As an alternative to the oversaturation of house and trance that were the staples of island-goers' diets, Väth quietly built up a following during the party season with his Cocoon nights at the Amnesia club. Like all of the prior mixes in the series, this double-disc set is a souvenir of some of the season's most popular tunes, mixed together with technical flawlessness. Minimal techno, electro, house, and a tinge of dance-punk make up this year's concoction, which is not an extreme departure from the previous year, but enough to make a noticeable difference in the overall sound and progression of the mix. The second disc is a DVD featuring a DJ set by Väth, a performance from yearly favorites Alter Ego, and several interviews explaining the history of the club and Väth's vision for the future. ~ Rob Theakston

Swimming To The Hook
Lumatic Swimming To The Hook CD  (2006)

Nugent
CD $16.45
Lumatic has been turning on little lights in the New York City music scene with sweet and low rock since they formed in January of 2004. The songs live on the edge where the underground meets the light on the street, at the door of the dark and dirty club where the fresh air starts to mingle with the murkiness. The band was started by Katherine Miller (singer/ keyboards/ laptop) after she graduated from Oberlin Conservatory with a degree in music composition. Beginning with Mozart at the age of 5 and ending with years of writing abstract electronic and instrumental music, she felt inclined to enter a more "user-friendly" world of music. Listening to music by PJ Harvey, Portishead, Bjork, and Radiohead, she began experimenting with song writing for a few years, combining it with her palette of abstract textures and samples. Eventually, she met Jason DiMatteo, the love of her life and the perfect bass player for her new band. He helped her bring her songs into the real world; he also introduced her to the drumming skills of John Bollinger, Jason's best friend, who would become the third core member of the band. Over the next 3 years, a circle of other talented musicians would come into the family mix and further crystallize the songs, including Chris Buono, Ty Citerman, Shahzad Ismaily, and Pete Smith. During that time, Katherine and Jason co-produced the band's debut album, "Swimming to the Hook."
