| | Ted Nugent Full Bluntal Nugity CD - Import Ted Nugent Discography of CDs
Personnel includes: Ted Nugent (vocals, guitar); Marco Mendoza (bass); Tommy Aldridge (drums). Recorded live at The Palace Of Auburn Hills, Detroit, Michigan in 2000. Ted Nugent, the man behind INTENSITIES IN TEN CITIES and IF YOU CAN'T LICK'EM. LICK'EM, has always delighted in unrepentantly boneheaded puns and double entendres, but the title of his 2001 live disc, FULL BLUNTAL NUGITY, may be the Detroit axe slinger's most hilariously egregious attempt at wordplay to date. That being said, Nugent's humor remains winning, if unsubtle, and his guitar skills remain unmatched. FULL BLUNTAL NUGITY features a dozen of Nugent's career highlights, including "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang," performed before an adoring hometown crowd. Like Double Live Gonzo recorded over 20 years before it, Full Bluntal Nugity is a concert recording that features the Motor City madman's biggest and best '70s arena rock hits. Recorded live during a New Year's Eve performance at Ted Nugent's annual Whiplash Bash in the guitarist's hometown of Detroit, this collection also includes plenty of Nugent's fast-talking concert banter. Not only is Nugent in fine performance form, but his accompaniment -- courtesy of drummer Tommy Aldridge (Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne) and bass player Marco Mendoza -- is also top-notch. The recording is clean and the performances are surprisingly energetic. Listening to Nugent as he blazes his way into the fifth decade of his performing career is a bit of a wonder, as songs like the epic "Great White Buffalo" and "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" sizzle with the man's hard-edged guitar crackle and type-A vocal blasts. Classic records like Free for All and Cat Scratch Fever from Nugent's peak '70s solo era are perhaps the best source for new listeners looking to get into the man's music. But hardcore fans and especially completists will get plenty of kicks out of Full Bluntal Nugity. ~ Vincent Jeffries In half a century of rock & roll, there have been all kinds of rock stars. Full Bluntal Nugity Live takes us into the world of "Motor City Madman" Ted Nugent. A double-disc set based primarily on a Detroit concert from August 21, 2001, this two-DVD package quickly establishes what kind of rock star Nugent is. Put simply, he is an exciting live performer, a skilled guitarist and songwriter, and an insufferable right-wing nut job. Watching Nugity, one almost starts to think that it's part rock video and part militia motivational film. Whether on-stage or off, Nugent takes every opportunity possible to espouse his fanatical passion for guns of all stripes (according to him, owning an Uzi is like owning a Corvette: part of the American Dream) and how he feels about those who don't share his obsession, which he even puts to music when he performs "Kiss My Ass" under the temporary title of "Kiss My Glock." We even get to see the Nugent clan in full camouflage out for a fun family day of killing. But apart from being a few pawns short of a chess match -- and admittedly, that adds a perverse engagement factor to the DVD -- Nugent is undeniably one of rock's most enduring acts. This new-millennium concert performance stands up well to what he was doing at his peak in the '70s, which, not surprisingly (and quite acceptably), is pretty much the same thing. And there are even five bonus clips from the "old days" that illustrate this very fact. Most of Nugent's best-loved incendiary material is here: "Stranglehold," "Paralyzed," "Snakeskin Cowboys," "Hey Baby," "Dog Eat Dog," "Cat Scratch Fever," "Wang, Dang, Sweet Poontang," and more -- all delivered with customary hubris and guitar-star bravado by the axeman, aided admirably by drummer Tommy Clufetos and bassist Marco Mendoza. As a musician, one has to give Nugent his due. The guy can play -- perhaps not with the technique of the master guitarists, but far better than he's generally given credit for. And, as we learn here, like all true musicians, he has an appreciation ofQ (9/01, p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...For connoisseurs of kerrang, this is a rare treat." Personnel: Rivers . Audio Mixer: Rich Costey. Words such as "goofy" and "geeky" have long been used to describe Weezer's music, but these qualities are only one aspect of the band's sound; beneath all the humorous pop culture references and snarky attitude, Rivers Cuomo touched upon a myriad of serious topics including existential angst, aging, and sexual mores. While at first listen RADITUDE seems to be one of the Weezer's silliest albums (song titles include "The Girl Hot Hot" and "In the Mall"), there is, as usual, more than meets the ear. Even on the paean to debauchery "Can't Stop Partying" (the lyrics of which were written by rapper Jermaine Dupri), there is a certain undercurrent of melancholy, suggesting that the song may ...
| | Flaming Lips Embryonic CD (2009)
Full Bluntal Nugity
$11.25 Personnel: Karen O (vocals); Thorsten Wörmann (spoken vocals); Dave Fridmann (programming). Audio Mixers: Dave Fridmann; Flaming Lips. Recording information: Dull Roar Studios, Oklahoma City, OK (02/2009-07/2009); Tarbox Road Studios, Cassadaga, NY (02/2009-07/2009). CHRISTMAS ON MARS might be the Flaming Lips' bona fide sci-fi epic, but EMBRYONIC is the musical equivalent of the final scenes of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY: transformative chaos that results in a new start. From THE SOFT BULLETIN onward, the Lips seemed focused on tidying the loose ends of their earlier work, almost to the point of constraining themselves. Their wilder side is ...
| | Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost CD (2009)
Full Bluntal Nugity
$11.35 Audio Mixer: Jason Lader. If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, THE STORY, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests here, including such L.A. linchpins as Benmont Tench and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, but also Elton John and his arranger, Paul Buckmaster. Tellingly, their presence is felt more than heard, as they never remove the spotlight from Carlile, who remains a singularly powerful singer/songwriter. When the setting is spartan, her voice ...
| | 10,000 Maniacs Our Time In Eden CD (1992)
Full Bluntal Nugity
$6.19 10,000 Maniacs: Natalie Merchant (vocals, piano); Rob Buck (guitar, sitar, banjo, mandocello); Dennis Drew (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards); Steve Gustafson (bass); Jerome Augustyniak (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Mary Ramsey (violin, viola); Bruce Dukov, Ralph Morrison (violin); Pamela Goldsmith (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Kim Laskowski, Atsuko Sato (bassoon); Charles Fleischer (harmonica); Maceo Parker (alto saxophone); Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis (tenor saxophone); Fred Wesley (trombone); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. Pushing through the sophomore jinx that gave Blind Man's Zoo its preachy feel, 10,000 Maniacs offer up a baker's dozen of wonderful folk-pop songs with hard-hitting messages, nearly matching the brilliance of their debut. Natalie Merchant is a few years older here, a few tribulations wiser, and a few shakes looser, although that's not to say she doesn't have a point (or 13) to make. Whether with old-school R&B horns ablaze or the simple elegance of a piano and strings, she glorifies, condemns, and cherishes the world she witnesses, not excusing herself or anyone else from the part they play. The rest of the band, Rob Buck, Dennis Drew, Steve Gustafson, and Jerome Augustyniak, gives her the superb musical roots and wings from which to grow and soar. The subject matter of the songs is sometimes subtle, sometimes overt, but always graceful. For instance, "These Are Days" is left open to interpretation, though the upbeat tone is unmistakable, while "I'm Not the Man" is a very pointed and poignant story of a jailed man falsely accused and awaiting his death. Merchant's poetry shimmers and tugs at your heart and head. The prophetically titled Our Time in Eden spawned modest hits with "These Are Days" and "Candy Everybody ...
