Two complete LPs by the Art Ensemble of Chicago are reissued in full on this single CD. Recorded in Paris originally for the BYG label, these intriguing and diverse performances feature the Art Ensemble when they were a quartet (before drummer Don Moye joined). Trumpeter Lester Bowie, saxophonists Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman, and bassist Malachi Favors all are heard playing many other instruments; for example, Jarman plays soprano, alto, clarinet, oboe, flute, marimba, vibes, congas, bells, whistles, gongs, siren, and guitar. The wide-ranging music mostly succeeds at looking both backwards (in eccentric ways) and toward the future. Of particular interest are "Old Time Religion," some credible bebop on "Dexterity," the funky "Rock Out," a demented "The Waltz," and the lengthy jams on "Song for Charles" and "A Brain for the Seine." Fascinating and always-colorful music that certainly breaks down a lot of musical barriers. ~ Scott Yanow

Her mother - herself the daughter of a Russian Opera diva, adored music and passed her passion along to her children. Tina was weaned on 70's FM radio and the music her Mother blasted from her stereo. Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, the Beatles, and Elvis were all early inspirations. But then an Aretha Franklin tape her sister Laura gave to her sealed Tina's musical fate. She had her first guitar at 13, and her first electric guitar at 16 and taught herself out of the chord books she found in her sister's piano bench. On Glen Campbell's albums -- By the Time I Get to Phoenix and Wichita Lineman -- the Jimmy Webb-authored title cuts tended to dominate the LP tracks somewhat; good as the album tracks were, they usually weren't quite up to the standard achieved by the AM-aimed title songs. On Galveston, Campbell and producer Al DeLory overcame that problem -- the Jimmy Webb title tune is fine, to be sure, but this time out, Campbell and DeLory no longer felt the need for the singer to cover contemporary rock and soul hits like "Homeward Bound" and "Dock of the Bay," which he pulled off, but not as well as some other songs he might've sung on those earlier albums.
