SEVEN UP is a 1972 release by krautrock icons Ash Ra Tempel with Timothy Leary.
Even with the presence of special guest Timothy Leary, Seven Up sticks to its predecessor's penchant for bizarre, bluesy psychedelia on the first side while the second takes off into the deepest realms of space rock. Fans of Leary may be a bit surprised, since he's but one of the five voices sprinkled throughout the album and sounds more like a poor man's Eric Burdon than an acid visionary might on tracks like "Right Hand Lover," "Downtown," and "Power Drive." Side two consists of three drawn-out space jams that conclude with a rushing of air quite close to a vacuum cleaner. Except for the last bit, Seven Up is not quite the meeting of minds that acid and Kraut fans expected. ~ John Bush

Seven Up album
$10.99 Experiment in Metaphysics is one of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts of the hippie era. Recorded live during a five-hour session in the basement of a shoe-repair shop in June of 1970, most of the 300 original copies of Experiment in Metaphysics were simply given away in one afternoon, yet, inexplicably, bootleg copies of the album later sprang up half-way around the world. The reason for the album's staying power is apparent: the music is gorgeous, first-rate progressive folk. In fact, Side Two of the original LP's label was given the title "Acid-Folk" (the other side was called "Kommercial"), probably one of the very first uses of that term. Perry Leopold creates a proto-gothic ambience full of dark and brooding imagery that is much less cartoonish than most of what passes as "acid," while maintaining that music's visceral punch. Like much of the youth countercultural scene of the times, Leopold can occasionally give into mystical pretentiousness. ...

Seven Up CD music
$28.89 Ash Ra Tempel's second album featured the first of several personnel changes, Klaus Schulze having departed for other realms and replaced as a result by Wolfgang Muller. A few guest players surfaced here and there as well, with one John L. taking the lead vocals -- another difference from the self-titled debut, which was entirely instrumental. The general principle of side-long efforts continued, though the first half was split into two related songs, "Light" and "Darkness." "Light" itself sounded halfway between the zoned-out exploration of "Traummaschine" and bluesy jamming, a weird if not totally discordant combination that still manages to sound more out there than most bands of the time. Gottsching's fried solo, in particular, is great, sending the rest of the song out to silence that leads into "Darkness." Said song initially takes a far more minimal ...
| | Tsurubami Gekkyukekkaichi CD (2003)
Seven Up music CDs
$10.65 Tsurubami's vaguely amorphous existence -- unsurprising given how members Emi Nobuko, Higashi Hiroshi, and Kawabata Makoto are known for many other efforts, the latter two for Acid Mothers Temple in particular -- seems to suit the flowing, soaring, psychedelic zone of this album well. Consisting of two lengthy improvisations, Gekkyukekkaichi was a bit of companion to the similarly recorded and released Tsukuyomi Ni from earlier that year, and both show that for the musicians it's not so much a question of side projects as it is a different approach. With Makoto on guitar and Hiroshi on bass, the former sets the tone of each performance while the latter drifts, sometimes barely audible, down below in the mix. In contrast, Nobuko throws herself in and out as she feels the need -- sometimes minutes of swirling electricity will pass before her quiet fills and rolls start cropping ...
| | Kawabata Makoto Inui, Vol. 2 CD (2000)
Seven Up songs
$13.89 Makoto Kawabata (listed here as the reverse) is the principal guitarist in Japanese hard psychedelia (psych-o-delia is more like it) Acid Mother's Temple, a band with a small but fanatical following who have played the U.S. sporadically and always done decibel damage to the hearing of their listeners. This solo album by Kawabata is not another exercise in Japanese power rock, but something else entirely, perhaps from another world. With a background in folk, world, solo guitar improv, and electronic musics, Kawabata offers us a solo set of four droning, meditative, improvised recordings using 12 different instruments, including electronics and water -- and no guitars -- to create a kind of improvised dream music. Performed solo on violin, kemenje, zurna, sarangi, taiko, gong, water, bouzouki, cello, vibes, organ, and sitar, these four tracks that encompass the CD's 40 minutes are equal ...
| | United States Of America CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Seven Up album
$13.99 Originally released on Columbia in 1968, The United States of America is one of the legendary pure psychedelic space records. Some of the harder-rocking tunes have a fun house recklessness that recalls aspects of early Pink Floyd and the Velvet Underground at their freakiest; the sedate, exquisitely orchestrated ballads, especially "Cloud Song" and the wonderfully titled "Love Song for the Dead Che," are among the best relics of dreamy psychedelia. Occasionally things get too excessive and ...

$17.09 Although American Idol goes on and on, some would say getting even stronger, the original Pop Idol in the U.K. is no more as Simon Cowell has moved on to concentrate on his latest project, The X Factor. Pop Idol's contestants were divided into three categories, solo performers aged 18-24, performers aged over 25, and the over 25 group Cowell was assigned to mentor. The winner of the first show in 2004 was Steve Brookstein, a likeable pub singer with a rough, soulful voice not unlike Luther Vandross' or Alexander O'Neal's. Having sung a range of songs on the show including Harold Melvin's "If You Don't Know Me by Now," Jackie Wilson's "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher)," Van Morrison's "Have I Told You Lately," and Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night," ...
