BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live.

After many years of writing poetry and prose, Renee picked up a guitar and started putting some of her words to music. Hungwe is the Zimbabwe/US mbira duo Musekiwa Chingodza and Jennifer Kyker. The name "hungwe" refers to the fish eagle, a bird of great importance within Shona cosmology. It is also a type of black and white cloth worn by spirit mediums. "Tsunga" is Hungwe's first album, released in 2001. Reviewing "Tsunga" for the Dandemutande online catalogue, Paul Novitski wrote, "This is a lively set of mbira duets that manage to simultaneously express the youthful energy of the musicians and deep antiquity of their repertoire. Musekiwa’s and Jennifer’s voices and playing styles are strong and well matched. Except for the vocals which sound a bit distant, the recording is immediate, throaty, and clear, sounding very much like they’re playing in the same room I’m dancing in. Handei!" Musekiwa Chingodza is a well-known Zimbabwean mbira and marimba player and teacher. He was born in Zimbabwe into a family of great mbira players in Mwangara village, Murewa, Zimbabwe in 1970. He began playing mbira at the age of five and is self-taught. Through listening to other gwenyambira, or great mbira players, he developed a strong attachment to and love for mbira music. He says, “Our music is both medicine and food, as mbira has the power to heal and to provide for people. Mbira pleases both the living and the dead.” In 1991, Musekiwa was a key member of the band Panjea, founded by Chris Berry. He composed the hit song “Ganda” on Panjea’s Zimbabwean album. ...
