On the Street Where You Live will be hard to believe for anyone with a little knowledge about John Greaves' career -- his membership in Henry Cow and his collaborations with singer/songwriter Peter Blegvad. This album has absolutely nothing to do with his previous projects. Accompanied by jazz pianist Marcel Ballot and guitarist Patrice Meyer, Greaves sings 17 standards from the perfect crooner's songbook: "My Funny Valentine," "Cry Me a River," "Skylark," "Over the Rainbow," "My Favorite Things," and many more like that. He doesn't touch a bass or guitar, he only sings, trying to convince listeners that he can be a worthy jazz club performer. The fact is, he is not bad at it and obviously sings from the heart. His musicians follow the rules of the genre without coming across as particularly talented, but then again they needed to be self-effacing to leave the spotlight for the singer. If many people may enjoy this album, who will actually want it? Vocal jazz fans have plenty of better, more-experienced crooners to choose from. Fans of Greaves are not prepared for this. Since there are no original songs to add to the man's work, if one doesn't care about this style of music -- fan or not -- this CD will sit on the shelf. ~ François Couture

Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth."
