One of the most appropriate album titles in metal history, Helloween's 10th full-length release is exactly what it says. The German quintet's first album for Nuclear Blast sees the band break from its traditional pomp-and-romp power metal leanings and experiment with a more dramatic (and less humorous) songwriting approach. Produced and engineered by melodic metal masterminds Roy Z. (Halford, Bruce Dickinson) and Charlie Bauerfeind (Blind Guardian, HammerFall), THE DARK RIDE breathes new, gritty life into the Helloween canon--with a sinister sneer.
After a surprising resurgence following 1996's The Time of the Oath, Helloween continued to expand and enrich their patented power metal, and while 2000's The Dark Ride might lack some of the youthful exuberance of the group's seminal '80s recordings, there are still many fine songs and fiery performances to be appreciated on this late-career gem from the influential German group. While the extreme guitar solos and overall precision of The Dark Ride will surely capture the ears of first-time listeners, it's the massive production and songwriting cohesiveness that will hook metal fans of discerning taste. As usual with this kind of release, there are some tedious and overwrought lyrics, but these things have to be accepted if one is to try and appreciate any power metal offering. Standouts include the detuned "I Live for Your Pain" with its inventive riffing and the epic closers "Immortal (Stars)" and "The Dark Side." Throughout The Dark Ride, and on the last two cuts especially, Helloween proves their historic value by delivering a critical combination that metal bands generally fail to even approximate: that is, high melodicism and sonic excess combined to form a kind of power through isolation. Difficult to explain perhaps, but metal fans know it when they hear it, and they hear it often when listening to Helloween. While not the best this band has to offer, The Dark Ride is still better than nine out of ten metal discs in any subgenre, from any era. ~ Vincent Jeffries

5 stars my favorite Helloween cd
I absolutlely love this cd. It never gets old for me. I own every Helloween cd and this is my favorite, but I love them all. It kills me they get very little mainstream attention, but their classically trained and technically sound while still giving the listener a very fun dark ride.

3 stars Awesome
I totally agree with the review below. "The Departed" is the best song I've heard in quite some time and by far Helloween's best ever. I've listened to this song about 50 times and never get sick of it. Buy it now!

4 stars If I could fly
What song by Helloween is better than If I could fly? This is one of the best metal songs ever! How was it not on treasure chest? The rest of the disc is good with maybe 4 more solid songs and then some junk. The purchase is worth it for that one song let alone the other one that others might like more than I! Get it!

4 stars Kia, Michael who?? Keeper of the seven what??
Far and away the best Helloween album yet. That may be an unpopular opinion amongst hardcore fans but it's stone cold accurate. Andi Deris has hit his peak performance and totally outshines anything Michael Kiske has ever done on this album (so much raw emotion in his voice) and low and behold he's one hell of a songwriter too! It's now obvious he's the best thing to ever happen to Helloween. There's some lackluster material here but there's also some of the best work this band has ever done. "If I could fly" is probably the best metal ballad ever made. "The departed" is one of the best metal songs I've ever heard and has the most apocolyptic riff of all time and "Mirror, Mirror captures all the brooding, dark themes of the album real well. A definite must for any metalhead as anything and everything can be found on this one.

The eerie soundtrack of young, depraved America, This full length debut produced by Jack White (The White Stripes) & recorded by Jim Diamond (Bantam Rooster). Full of pulsating, creepy rock 'n' roll. Alien
Strapping Young Lad Alien CD  (2005) Bonus Track; Japan

Dark Ride
CD $36.09
CD contains 1 bonus track.
Never mind System of a Down's irresistibly quirky Serj Tankian. If any heavy metal musician were picked to represent the musically adept but incurably goofy spirit of Frank Zappa, it would probably be gifted lunatic Devin Townsend, whose prolific and eclectic output -- not to mention blackened sense of humor -- over the course of a steadily lengthening career continues to amaze and confuse in equal quantities. Through those years, Strapping Young Lad, while ostensibly a "group," has served as the most common laboratory for Townsend's wacky solo experiments, but word is, studio album number four, 2005's fittingly named Alien, is their first true band effort. This is somewhat rather hard to ascertain, but there's no disputing the additional claim about the album constituting an exercise in catharsis, nor the fact that few bands choose song titles as descriptive of their contents as SYL. To wit, "Imperial" comprises Scandinavian-flavored black metal of earth-scorching intensity, the nearly unpronounceable ...

O.C.D. Circus
O C D Circus O.C.D. Circus CD  (2003)

Dark Ride
CD $17.69
Hey there! O.C.D. Circus here!O.C.D. Circus is Aaron Walker and Chris Van Scyoc. With a finger on the pulse of the absurd and a keen ear for hooks, O.C.D. Circus pleasingly challenges all listeners with original music that smears stylistic borders with silly putty. Listening to this band is like "petting a cat backwards - something just isn't right." Chris plays guitars and Aaron plays da drums. Everybody sings!- ABSURD-O-FEST promo / 2003Formed at the turn of the century, the duo set out to challenge themselves, their band-mates, and their listeners. They are forever tugging the strings of music. "Doesn't it feel good to make a discovery or learn something new?"-CVS "That's what this is about - that feeling of something shared - bringing people together. HEY!"There is nothing like watching a band performing with smiles on their faces. It's their enthusiasm that's so contagious. Over the course of an OCD concert, one will think, belly laugh, reflect and bounce with joy! This band is happy! They remain grateful and generous...a breath of fresh air.Why Bother? The story is long-winded and prosaic, but the brief, shallow "Extra, Extra" version goes thusly: After some years stumbling about with various bands and musical projects, Chris and Aaron embarked upon independent but simultaneous pilgrimages to a remote monastery in Eureka, Montana to reflect upon their experiences and frustrations with the music business, and to explore meditatively alternative (but straight) lifestyles. Their fortuitous meeting during a workshop on existentialism (which trained in the art of sitting for long hours and sighing intermittently) led to friendly discussion of their mutual search for meaning in their music-infested lives. 'Twasn't long before they discovered their shared calling, one which would fulfill their potentials for contributing to the betterment of the world. They resolved to work together to pursue their sacred mission, once sanctioned ...
