| | In Flames Whoracle CD In Flames Discography of CDs
Progressive metal group In Flames' fifth LP, "WHORACLE," expanded with three extra songs. 2001, Chinese import.
A master of progressive death metal or the "Gothenberg sound" practiced by many a Swedish band, In Flames delivers one of its best efforts with 1997's Whoracle. One extremely heavy number after another flows continuously from this record's track list, including standouts like the mind-bending "Gyroscope" and "Morphing Into Primal," just two of the original and extremely well-executed songs offered on this release. Indeed, some tracks are much better than others on Whoracle. Softer numbers like "Jester Script Transfigured," with its half-acoustic Metallica ballad vibe, could probably have been left off this otherwise powerful recording. There are also some rather unnecessary vocal histrionics, most notably on "Worlds Within the Margin," but this kind of overcooked "singing" really comes with the death metal territory. None of these sour notes manages to damage Whoracle, and the record has ultimately become accepted in the highly factional underground metal community as an important release not only for In Flames, but for the entire melodic death metal movement. ~ Vincent Jeffries
Includes the bonus tracks 'Goliath's Disarm Their Davids', Acoustic Medley' & 'Behind Space' (live). 2000.

Whoracle album
$14.09 Recorded in 2000 during the band's Clayman tour, this hourlong live CD -- consisting mainly of songs from the Clayman, Colony, and Whoracle albums -- gives a good idea why In Flames has earned such wide appeal among metal fans. They're heavy and intense enough to satisfy a good portion of death/black metal listeners, but they also have a melodic flair and a general old-fashioned metal spirit likely to resonate with people more at home with bands like Iron Maiden or Rainbow. And while singer Anders Fridn's raspy, shouted vocals are mainly expressions of anguish and personal pain, these feelings are offset by the hopeful and often triumphant tone of the guitars. Plus, the band has written some great songs over the years, among them such set list highlights as "Behind Space," "Jotun," and "&Clayman." Jesper Strmblad and Bjrn Gelotte's tag-team guitar work shines throughout, especially on the harmonized dual-lead sections, and the overall performances are tight and energetic. In addition, the sound is clear and well-balanced for a live recording, and there is little time wasted in between tracks on excess applause or stage banter. So, while Tokyo Showdown isn't totally essential for people who have ...
| | Dream Theater Live Scenes From Ny CD (2001) (Import) Enhanced CD; Germany
Whoracle CD music
$14.45 Disc 3 is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Progressive metal heroes Dream Theater forge ahead, unmatched in popularity and success in their chosen niche. The Long Islanders marked the final show of their 2000 tour by pulling out every trick from their collective hats, which included elaborate staging (a la Queensryche's MINDCRIME) and pushed the limits even further with a frock-clad gospel choir. As multiple cameras and sound recording gear were engaged, the historic August night was captured for fans on the three CD's that make up LIVE SCENES FROM NEW YORK.
The band tears through a nearly flawless version of their epic "Metropolis Part 2" concept piece that stands impressively on its own merit. Treating their adoring fans, the quintet presses on with a collection of older material, highlighted by the back-and-forth ...

| | Pink Floyd Oh By The Way Box Set CDs (2007) Box Set
Whoracle CD music
$215.19 The mammoth 16-disc box set OH BY THE WAY was released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd's first album. It contains every one of Floyd's studio albums, each packaged in a miniature-LP-style sleeve. It's the most exhaustive overview one could ask for, chronicling the band's beginnings as pioneering psychedelic scenemakers through their '70s tenure as prog-rock merchants and their latter-day reincarnation as grand old men of British rock.
While rarities-seekers should be advised of the lack of bonus/previously unreleased tracks here, there's so much dazzling material that it doesn't really matter. Pink Floyd were the original psychedelic ...

Whoracle album
$12.95 Rodney Parker and 50 Peso Reward is one of the most intriguing and insurrectionary bands to come out of the Texas music revolution since Steve Earle or the Old 97s. Shaking off the norms of the modern Texas music establishment, Parker & the Rewards take a more radical approach - a sound that is not any more southern rock than Steve Earle and not any more outlaw than Robert Earl Keen. Like Earle, there are no plinks in their guitar riffs, the sound moves like a heavy motor across the strings. Like Keen, Rodney Parker is gruff, with a hint of sawdust ...

| | Will Kimbrough Americanitis CD (2006)
Whoracle music CDs
$11.39 Nashville-based guitarist Will Kimbrough is usually so busy performing with others (Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider, Jimmy Buffett) that he is typically too busy to work on his own records. Americanitis marks his first solo outing in four years and only his third since 2000. Rather than being simply an album of stockpiled songs, Americanitis stands as a strong statement about what Kimbrough sees as happening around America and the world. What saves this disc from being a shrill set of screeds are Kimbrough's sense of humor and his varied musical palette. His contempt for corporate amorality gets disguised in the darkly comic, front porch jazz-flavored "I Lie." Similarly, he slips some Bush bashing into the sublimely power poppy "Less Polite," while the boppy soul of "Everyone's in Love" could be a lighthearted Elvis Costello Get Happy! outtake except its political lyrics talk of "strange times/hate crimes." Not every song is leavened with humor. On the powerful "Pride," Kimbrough sermonizes on hypocrisy ("When did pride get crossed off this list of deadly sins?" he asks.) that sounds like something his recent employer Rodney Crowell might do. The title track is a moving country duet with some Dylanesque touches, while bluegrass/gospel-infused "Warring Ways" is a spare, eloquent plea for peace. Kimbrough, however, stops short from making this disc a completely sociopolitical song cycle. Several tunes concentrate on the politics of relationships. The twangy rocker "Another Train" concerns a man trying to coerce a woman to stay over for the night. Both the rootsy rave-up "Let Me Say Yes" and the bluesy "Enemy" find the man in apology mode. Kimbrough concisely sums up the entire album in his closing tune, when he sings: "I won't be afraid and I won't be proud/And I won't be ashamed about singing out loud/About peace in the land and a brand new song." A bold, deeply felt effort that is never not entertaining, Americanitis is a potent reminder that Kimbrough should devote more time making his own "brand new songs" rather than just being a sideman. ~ Michael Berick

$12.85 | | Karl Latham Resonance CD (2007)
Whoracle songs
$16.45 Jazz drummer Karl Latham is an inventive powerhouse whose influences are many but whose ideas are his own. On Resonance, his second album as a leader, Latham hooks up with guitarist John Hart, acoustic bassist Kermit Driscoll, and trumpeter Vinnie Cutro for a set of interpretations of rock, pop, and jazz classics from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Bjrk, and U2 that reinvent the source material while paying respects to it. Both Hendrix and Wonder turn up twice as composers, with the former's "Manic Depression" serving as the album's most far-reaching, avant exercise. Each of the bandmembers is a virtuoso, but it's Hart who drives this particular jam, taking it to free-form places that Hendrix himself would no doubt have admired. Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" is a chill samba-esque reading that allows Latham an opportunity to make use of subtleties on his kit and his mates to swing softly. The Bjrk tune, "Pagan Poetry," is handled with a light, moody touch that practically places the leader into the background and conveys the song's atmospheres smartly, but U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," while also a smooth acoustic ballad that amply displays the band's chops, never quite delivers fully. Of the remainder of the tracks, Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing" is thrown into modern dance club territory with angular twists and a tight, ever-shifting rhythmic emphasis, and Hart's original "Tadpole" is a bit of '70s-era Miles Davis funk that pushes each player to the edge. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
Drummer Karl Latham is a classic Gemini who has performed around the globe in almost every musical genre imaginable; with jazz masters Claudio Roditi, John Lee, Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis and Clark Terry, modern jazz masters Mark Egan, Michal Urbaniak and Don Braden, rockers Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter, as well as, European jazz artists Wolfgang Lackerschmid, Hendrik Meurkens and Johannes Mössinger. “Resonance”, Latham’s second solo release, encompasses his diverse experiences culminating in a full spectrum jazz/rock/jam sonic experience. “Resonance” features original compositions and intriguing arrangements, from burning Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Wonder classics to a haunting arrangement of Bjork’s “Pagan ...
