The infectious title track was a Top 40 hit and it helped make Help Yourself Tom Jones' first Top Ten album, but the record was weighed down by lackluster material, making the album his weakest set since A-Tom-Ic Jones. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Joe Satriani Crystal Planet CD (1998)
Help Yourself CD music
$6.75 On CRYSTAL PLANET Satch provides his fans with exactly what they've come to expect: crunching riffs, soaring melodies, chord changes and solos from heaven. He deviates little from such past releases as THE EXTREMIST and SURFING WITH THE ALIEN, and as the saying goes: "if it ain't broke". That's not to say he doesn't stay contemporary, as "Raspberry Jam Delta-V" effectively dabbles in electronica as subtle background noise.
"Love Thing" is a beautiful ballad and potential single, and Satch is able to make the guitar "talk". There are also elements of funk ("A Piece Of Liquid") and metal ("With Jupiter In Mind"). But his skills shine through the most when he shreds, ...

Help Yourself music CDs
$14.79 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Dan The Automator.
With all his high-profile alliances, producer/turntablist Dan Nakamura could just as well be known as Dan The Collaborator. Since garnering attention for his distinctive prouction on oddball hip-hop mystic Kool Keith's 1996 release under his Dr. Octagon pseudonym, he's joined in league with everyone from Prince Paul and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien to Damon Albarn and Mike Patten in heralded projects landing all over the musical map such as Deltron 3030, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Lovage and the platinum-selling Gorillaz. Hence, it's rather surprising his own name has graced but one barely noticed EP before 2002's mix CD WANNA BUY A MONKEY?
That the CD takes its name from the sole line uttered by David ...
| | Bob Mould Body Of Song CDs (2005) Limited Edition; Boxed Set
Help Yourself songs
$21.55 Where does one go after fronting one of the most influential American rock bands of the post-'70s era? How does one remain occupied after helping determine the sound and shape of alternative rock in the '80s, '90s, and 2000s? If the person is Bob Mould (whose group Husker Du is the mystery band referred to above; his follow-up band, the razory punk-pop act Sugar, wasn't too shabby either), he records solo albums. From the introspective acoustic-scapes of 1989's WORKBOOK to the electronic tendencies of 2002's MODULATE, Mould has continually pushed past the shadow of his legacy, venturing into new directions while still maintaining his mercurial rock edge.
2005's BODY OF SONG bears many of the hallmarks of Mould's best work. The programming touches from previous efforts can still be heard, but the massive, guitar-dominated, full-band sound recalls Sugar circa COPPER BLUE (and there is a similarly metallic, full-saturation production style). As anyone familiar with Mould will expect, the songs are quite sharp too: they overflow with memorable, melodic hooks, introspective lyrics, and full-throttle passion. From the thunderous opener "Circles" through the plaintively confessional "Days of Rain" to "Beating Heart the Prize," the surging closer, BODY OF SONG is a welcome return to form for this rock icon.
In 1998, after the release of his album The Last Dog and Pony Show, Bob Mould announced he was hanging up his electric guitar and exploring other musical avenues outside of rock & roll. More than a few fans expressed some trepidation about Mould's career choice, and that buzz became a roar after Mould released Modulate in 2002, which found him diving head first into electronic music. At least in America, the vast majority of rock fans have not been able to come to terms with the rise of electronica, and regardless of the album's virtues or flaws, few listeners were willing to look past the hard, kinetic surfaces of the music and give the songs a fair hearing. It would appear this prejudice did not escape Mould's notice, as 2005's Body of Song was widely hyped as Mould's return to rock, complete with electric guitars and a live rhythm section. But a spin of the album suggests the album isn't so much a step back to the sound he pioneered in Hüsker Dü and Sugar as an attempt to have things both ways. (The fact that Mould spins regularly at a dance club in Washington, D.C., suggests he hasn't lost interest in electronic music as a creative form.) Many of the cuts on Body of Song sound as if Mould is still thinking club music, but is filtering it through the framework of a three-piece rock band; "(Shine Your) Light Love Hope," "Always Tomorrow," and "I Am Vision, I Am Sound" are dominated by echoed textures, lockstep rhythms, and vocoder-processed vocals that wouldn't be out of place on a house track, but with a live drummer (Brendan Canty from Fugazi on most tracks, who is predictably excellent) and Mould adding a layer of guitar over the top. And while Mould frequently bellows his lyrics with an approximation of the fury of his best-known work, most of the songs on Body of Song deal with deeply problematic relationships and on paper speak more of sorrow, confusion, ...
