PRIMITIVE GUITARS is an 11-track instrumental release by Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera that includes "Criollo" and "Ritmo De Los Angeles" and features bassist John Wetton.
Marking Manzanera's tenth year of as a professional musician, Primitive Guitars means to be a looking back at his stylistic growth through a series of solo pieces that take in the various stages of his life: childhood in South America, adolescence in London, stints in Roxy Music, 801, and other projects. These are hinted at in the titles ("Caracas," "Bogota," "Ritmo de Los Angeles") and often in the Latin influences of the melodies and playing styles. On all these pulsing, groove-centered instrumental tracks, Manzanera is backed only by a drum machine and, on one tune, John Wetton on bass. Otherwise all the diverse sounds, noises, melodies, and rhythms have been created on guitar, linking Manzanera to another progressive virtuoso, Adrian Belew. In between tracks, Manzanera inserts snatches of dialogue recorded at various rehearsals, making this a successful, very personal album. ~ Ted Mills
First released in 1982, 'Primitive Guitars' truly is a soloalbum. Released at the same time as Roxy Music's 'Avalon', this experimental album received rave reviews. Now digitallyremastered it includes the two bonus tracks, 'Criollo' (french remix) and 'Frontera' (instrumental version).
Personnel: Phil Manzanera (various instruments); John Wetton (bass).
Engineers: Phil Manzanera, Rhett Davies, Ian Little.

Primitive Guitars album
$10.05 "Long distance" doesn't only mean annoying calls from MCI, Sprint, and AT&T marketers mangling your name. In the case of this sinewy New York trio, it's a tribute to perseverance. Riding high in 1998 with a wonderful sophomore LP, Apartment Life, and two fine songs in the hit film There's Something About Mary, the group suddenly found its momentum dashed. Dropped by not one, but two major labels, Ivy further suffered the near-crippling loss of its recording studio, as fireman hacked it to pieces fighting a bagel-shop blaze. Then two of its members became parents together, while the other found himself a critical smash with his other band, Fountains of Wayne. Had they a permanent drummer, doubtless he would have spontaneously combusted. And had Ivy surrendered, well, in words their Paris-born singer would understand, se la guerre.
But Ivy refused to go "down in flames," and Long Distance is a charming product of belief that wouldn't be deterred (hell, even when we first heard this LP last fall, it was only a Japanese import!). While retaining their streamlined, catchy pop and Dominique Durand's gorgeous cooing, ...
| | Jai Uttal Shiva Station CD (1997)
Primitive Guitars CD music
$18.99 Westerners like Jai Uttal and Krishna Das have become enormously popular by writing non-traditional music to accompany incantations to Shiva, Ram, Radha and a whole stable of deities. But where Das makes simple, heartfelt music to sing along to, Uttal aims for sophisticated ethnic fusions that are as appropriate for the dance floor as for a kirtan gathering. Uttal was already prominent in the field of world music when the 1997 release of SHIVA STATION brought him a large mainstream audience, bolstered by the growing popularity of yoga and chant.
Aided by producer and musical adventurer Bill Laswell, Uttal freely mixes classical Indian melodies with elements of funk, trance, dub, and an intoxicating feeling of controlled chaos. The passionate vocals sound largely improvised, enhanced by supportive backing from the Pagan Love Orchestra and samples of wandering street musicians of Bengal (to whom Uttal paid homage on his 1994 release BEGGARS AND SAINTS). A lush blend of instruments includes banjo, sitar, ...
| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Primitive Guitars music CDs
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this ...

| | Orianthi Believe CD (2009)
Primitive Guitars CD music
$9.09 With her mind-blowing mix of heavy metal guitar prowess and bluesy, soulful vocals, Orianthi will draw some justifiably well-earned comparisons to such giants of rock guitar as Jimi Hendrix and, her own idol, Carlos Santana. On her 2009 sophomore album, BELIEVE, her style hews closer to the finger-frenetic pyrotechnics of such '70s and '80s icons as Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. Throw in her ability to sell a lyric and carry a strong melodic vocal phrase while also throwing down some devastating slabs of heavy metal riffage, and she starts to look a lot like the fantasy love child of Prince and Lita Ford. What's even more delicious is how, at face value, BELIEVE fits nicely next to studio-crafted--albeit stylistically successful--albums by ...
| | Richie Beirach Trust CD (1996)
Primitive Guitars music CDs
$10.69 Though Richie Beirach isn't obscure, he isn't as well-known as he should be. A flexible pianist, Beirach can be quite lyrical on standards, although being cerebral and abstract also comes easy to him. One of the more cerebral, unsentimental albums he recorded in the '90s was Trust, a fine post-bop trio date boasting ...
