| | Tift Merritt Bramble Rose CD (2002)
Lively Up Yourself music CDs
$12.59 In his short story Billy the Kid, Steve Earle spun the tale of a fresh-faced kid who arrived in Nashville with a handful of brilliant songs, cut a stone classic album, scored a record deal most musicians would give their eye teeth to get, and married the girl of his dreams, all in a few weeks before cruel fate caught up with him. While one can only hope the powers that be have a more generous final act planned for Tift Merritt, listening to her first album, Bramble Rose, is a reminder that such things could possibly happen in the real world. If Bramble Rose is a bit short of perfect, it leaves no doubt that Merritt is already a talent of the first order. As a singer, she has a simply gorgeous vocal instrument (imagine the passion of Lucinda Williams and the real-world twang of Iris Dement fused with the silky beauty of Emmylou Harris), and her songs are nearly as impressive as her vocals. At 27, Merritt's lyrical perspective speaks of the often-unfortunate twists and turns of fate, but without bitterness or spite, and she can jump from the wistful sway of "Virginia, No One Can Warn You" to the R&B-influenced bite of "Neighborhood" and back to the classic weeper style of the title cut without missing a step or ever sounding less than committed or convincing. Merritt also has the good fortune of having a superb backing band who support her songs with grace and impeccable taste, and producer Ethan Johns gets this music on tape with a sound that's at once intimate and comfortably wide open. It's difficult to imagine that an artist whose previous recording experience amounted to one self-released 45 and a split EP could turn in an album so strong and well-crafted, but it's even harder to imagine that listeners are likely to hear many debut albums nearly as good as Bramble Rose in the final six months of 2002, and by all rights this should be the first offering in a long and successful career for Tift Merritt. ~ Mark Deming

| | Marc Live Validation CD (2004)
Lively Up Yourself songs
$26.79 One could spend hours talking about all the local flavors that exist in hip-hop these days. Some MCs have strong regional prejudices, but others keep themselves creatively healthy by turning to different parts of the United States for inspiration -- which is what Marc Live (formerly Marc Rippin') does on his first solo effort, Validation. The former Raw Breed member favors a very bicoastal approach on this 2004 release, drawing on influences from both California (Ice-T, Dr. Dre) and the Northeast (Redman, the Notorious B.I.G.). A Bronx native with a Miami address and many Los Angeles connections, Live features guest rappers who became famous in California (Ice-T) or in New York (50 Cent, Kool Keith, Smoothe da Hustler). Of course, some of the rappers who have been closely identified with L.A. are originally from the East Coast -- including Ice-T, Everlast, and Donald D -- and for Live, having a bicoastal outlook makes perfect sense on this 2004 release, which lists Ice and Kool Keith as executive producers. By 2004 standards, Validation isn't groundbreaking; many of the topics Live addresses -- the dangers of thug life, the surplus of sucker MCs who lack genuine rhyming talent -- have been addressed on numerous hip-hop discs over the years. But if Validation ...

Lively Up Yourself CD music
$14.15 C.O.B.'s second album was, like its first, a mighty rare and little-heard item, though its rep has risen slightly since then due to its reissue on CD (though that itself is hard to find). It's not much different than the debut, either, and can't fail to remind seasoned British folk-rock listeners of a more normal Incredible String Band, though the connection's legitimate since C.O.B.'s Clive Palmer was a founding member of the ISB. There's a plaintive, almost hymn-like feel to this muted British folk-rock, which is much folkier than rocky. There's also a tinge of acid-folk in the use of some relatively exotic instrumentation for a folk-rock record, including balalaika, dulcitar, tabla, banjo, and harmonium-like organ. "Eleven Willows" gets a little closer to Pentangle-Bert Jansch territory, and Genevieve Baker's nicely haunting background singing on that track makes one wish she'd been given a more prominent role in the band's vocals, which are merely adequate, on the whole. The 1999 CD reissue on Lotus adds two bonus tracks from a non-LP 1972 single, "Blue Morning" and "Bones," which are more rock-oriented than the songs on the album, particularly the reggae-fied "Blue Morning." ~ Richie Unterberger

There are only 6 copies on sale made especially for CDbaby, then it will be available for download only.---------------------------------------------------REVIEW - Gaz rockin' records: SKA STARS OF THE 80'SBy Dell (Backdoor Promotions England).By 1990, Gaz's Rockin Records had a host of ska stars recording for its label, so the idea to release an album by Ska Stars of The 80's was a very sensible one.Gaz Mayall invited the legendary Prince Buster on board, and his version of Stack O Lee with The Trojans, sent me in to a spasm of musical bliss the very first time I heard it. Big name UK ska acts like The Potato 5 and The Forest Hillbillies are also included on the compilation, along with another ska legend, the late, great Laurel Aitken.
