Known primarily as the frontman for the Canadian alternative-rock act Moist, David Usher offers up his sophomore solo outing, MORNING ORBIT, which features "Too Close to the Sun" and "Fast Car."
The lead singer of Moist, David Usher's second solo album (after 1998's Little Songs) in many ways could have simply been released as another Moist album. Not only is the overall sound remarkably similar to their melancholic 1999 release, Mercedes Five and Dime, but Usher has invited all of his bandmates to contribute to the majority of the songs. Four-fifths of the band play on the album's first single, "Alone in the Universe." Regardless of whether one considers Morning Orbit to be a solo or group effort, the fact remains that either way, this is a fine, well-crafted album. Beatlesque album-opener "How Are You" provides a good introduction to what the album offers: mellow, somber, thoughtful contemporary rock/pop. Morning Orbit showcases a veritable who's who of the Canadian contemporary rock scene, including Jag Tanna and Bruce Gordon of I Mother Earth and the Tragically Hip's Gord Sinclair. However, the most unexpected guest on the album is Canadian reggae rapper Snow (author of 1993's worldwide hit "Informer") on "Joy in Small Places," a collaboration that ends up sounding far better than it has any right to be. Usher's cover of Tracey Chapman's "Fast Car" is another winner. While still instantly recognizable, Usher tweaks it just enough to make it his own. Although coming to prominence as a typical angst-ridden alternative rock band in the early '90s, Moist and particularly Usher have demonstrated continued growth with each successive album and are developing their own unique sound and identity. Although some of the songs tend to sound too similar to each in mood and tempo, this is a small complaint. Whether solo or in a group, Usher's future looks promising, and fans of Mercedes Five and Dime and acoustic pop/rock are recommended to pick this one up. ~ Deren Svendsen

In "The Devil's Courtship" Reid invites the young lass to "gang along wi' me" while Polwart politely demurs, at least until the price is right. ...
| | Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream CD (2009)
Morning Orbit songs
$9.58 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it ...

In the mercurial world of pop music, there are precious few artists who can truly be labeled survivors; performers who successfully weather changes in times and tastes while managing to reinvent themselves for new generations of fans. From her days with Sonny in the '60s to her divahood at the end of the '90s, Cher is undeniably a survivor. The first single off LIVING PROOF, "Song for the Lonely," attempts to pick up where her mega-hit "Believe" left off, as a simultaneously anthemic and danceable pop confection with an emotional, ...
