VALLEY OF THE LOST is a 10-song CD from Swedish power metal band Winterlong.
Winterlong comes across more or less as a mix of bands such as Helloween and Iron Maiden. However, there are other elements here. In fact, some tracks call to mind Judas Priest. The music here is fast and technical, but still has an emotion and feeling to it. In other words, it does not come across as sterile. Indeed, this really does come across as quite inspired and original progressive metal while still giving the nod to other groups as influences. In typical proto prog metal fashion, the music is all over the place, encompassing lots of interesting changes. The group comes across on this release as quite polished, and the album seems well thought out. They even include some pure progressive rock sections and a killer acoustic guitar dominated intro (not metal style, but more progressive rock-oriented) for good measure. If they can garner enough attention, they should acquire a strong following. ~ Gary Hill
Valley Of The Lost is the ultimate album from north Sweden's Winterlong, with a new fresh sound like the biggest storm. With a bass like thunder (Erik Tomberg), drums of doom (Toni Erkkila), fast riffs (Thorbjorn Englund) and roaring vocals (Hussni Morsare), the warriors of Winterlong now stand in arms. Guitarist Englund was inspired by Malmsteen, but has also sought inspiration outside the guitar music genre, such as through violin music, and even folk music. And when Englund discovered Vanessa Mae“s astonishing classical work there was just another push into the classical direction. Valley Of The Lost should definitely be the wake-up-call for the next generation of true metal warriors. Winterlong Valley Of The Lost Songs | 1. | From Heaven to Hell |

Valley Of The Lost album
$32.85 This solo effort from Marillion frontman Steve Hogarth is a very entertaining disc that covers many musical styles. The music moves from playful to contemplative to pop to prog with a proficiency and ease that is quite impressive. The Marillion-isms are not exceptionally frequent here, but they really are not missed on this entertaining release. "H," as he likes to be called, is joined on this album by Dave Gregory, Richard Barbieri, Clem Burke, Chucho Merchan, and Luis Jardim, along with several additional musicians. ~ Gary Hill

Valley Of The Lost CD music
$15.15 Let's face it, the 21st century prog rock scene has never been healthier. Since it has been allowed to grow completely outside the substance-destroying gaze of the entertainment industry at large, and hasn't even been considered by the think-tank of the death machine (corporate radio), it has been allowed to grow undisturbed by the usual forces of entropy. Bands like Magellan, Spock's Beard, Neal Morse's Testimony project -- just to name a few. The Flower Kings on this double-disc, live CD, featuring six compositions ("Garden of Dreams" is in two parts, making for a total of seven tracks) offer one of the brightest views yet of a band whose obsession with musical exploration and complex harmonic issues never, ever gets in the way of an honest expression of "song," and the human emotions and narratives within it. Led by guitarist and vocalist Roine Stolt, this Swedish septet offers a live outing every bit as adventurous as their studio offerings. Stolt's debt to Yes' Jon Anderson and Steve Hackett is still everywhere evident, but his lyrics ...

Valley Of The Lost music CDs
$16.79 The Baton label, run by Sol Rabinowitz, was a small New York R&B indie that had some modest successes in the 1950s, most notably with the original version of "Got My Mojo Working," by Ann Cole (included here). This has 28 sides from 1953-1959, three of them previously unissued, presenting a solid if occasionally generic mix of period R&B styles, particularly doo wop and jump R&B. Highlights include the dreamy doo wop of the Rivileers' 1953 single "A Thousand Stars," Baton's first release and first success; the Hearts, whose "Lonely Nights" (from 1955) is one of the best examples of the fairly infrequently recorded female doo wop group genre; and the Lonely Ones' "My Wish," which sounds a little like Little Anthony & the Imperials. Much of the doo wop material has a rather poppier flavor than the typical stuff from the style, which actually makes it stand out from the pack a bit. Blues collectors will be most interested in the nine tracks by Ann Cole; none of them match "Mojo Working" ("I've Got Nothing Working Now" is a blatantly similar-sounding follow-up), ...
| | Thulsa Doom She Fucks Me CD (2002)
Valley Of The Lost songs
$8.04 Thulsa Doom's brilliant year 2000 debut, The Seats Are Soft But the Helmet Is Way Too Tight, was so criminally overlooked that their American record company, This Dark Reign, must have taken it as proof that the Gods really were crazy -- dedicated stoner rock and doom enthusiasts certainly did. Just to double-check, the label felt compelled to reissue this five-song EP, dating from 1999, and infamous for its cover picture of Bill Clinton flashing the devil horns (or hang loose sign, if you ask a surfer dude) to go with its Lewinsky-inspired title -- sweet! Sadly, it too didn't strike a chord with your average music consumer, despite containing two of the aforementioned album's best cuts -- the piledriving "Sins of the Next Man" and the colossal and hilarious "Birthday Pony" -- alongside three rarely heard tunes. Among these, both "Fatboys Head" and "Cities After Cheese" are ...

$8.65 Arty noise merchants the Locust started Cattle Decapitation, and not surprisingly the band comes off on To Serve Man as a caricature of the grindy gore-core bands they hope to emulate.
