Sarah Brightman's Classics collects old and new recordings of some of her classical vocal performances, including "Ave Maria," "Dans La Nuit," "Alhambra," and "Figlio Perduto." "Pie Jesu" is the lone nod to her collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Weber and "Time to Say Goodbye" is probably the most recognizable song on the album to the majority of Brightman's audience. Most of the other performances on Classics follow that song's lead, mixing Brightman's crystalline soprano with lush and somewhat pop-tinged arrangements. In other words, the singer's fans will feel right at home with her interpretations of the classics here. ~ Heather Phares Sure, she's as close as you can get to naked in the album artwork. OK, so there's an insert hawking Sarah Brightman calendars, coffee mugs, and sweatshirts. Yes, there's a fair amount of calculation likely in her pop-classical crossover. That doesn't mean the lady can't sing like an angel. Before the embryo-with-pipes known as Charlotte Church came along, Brightman was THE pop-classical singer, whose supernatural pipes allowed her to appeal to both camps with equal verve. CLASSICS proves that, aided by a bevy of orchestras and choirs, Brightman is still big coin in the crossover world. And she's got a lot more traditional operatic chops than little Miss Church to boot. Making her way through old warhorses like "Pie Jesu," "Ave Maria," and "Nessun Dorma," Brightman manages to invest these tracks with new life, and when she takes on the Linda Ronstadt tune "Winter Light" she brings to it an ethereal majesty that leaves no question as to her interpretive abilities on the pop side of the fence.

Sarah at her BEST!!!!!!!!!! Sarah uses her her magnificent voice by singing a variety of musical gendres. Equisit! Submitted by farouk02382 (Whitman, Ma, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A classically blend of musical material Alot of the tracks have an etheral quality. I enjoy Sarah's version of WINTER LIGHT by Linda Ronstadt. I like the new and live versions of previously released songs and arias. Sarah's lyric soprano works well for the material. I would have thought that arias by Donzetti, Mozart ,Orff and other Puccini possibly material from REQUIEM or Gershwin, Bernstein, Douglas Moore, Meyerbeer, Delibe's LAKME, Verdi, Gilbert and Sullivan would have been included. Her single and live versions of Mozart's ALLELUIA and Donzetti's REGNAVA NEL SILENZIO do show off her coloratura technique as she did in Strouse's NIGHTINGALE and Llyod-Webber's PHANTOM OF HE OPERA. Bravissimo, Sarah. Submitted by MichaelVersage (Batavia, New York USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Something old, something new A good collection that won't disappoint Sarah fans. Nice to hear her do a cover of Ronstadt's "Winter Light." I was a bit taken aback by the CD artwork. Judging from Sarah's wardrobe (or in this case, lack thereof), she seems to be suffering from Mariah Carey syndrome. Submitted by a reviewer (Nashville, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Recorded at EMI Abbey Road Studio No. 1, Angel Studio No. 1 and Nemo Studios in London, England, and Alexander Digital Suite in Miami, Florida. Sarah Brightman, who enjoyed a European hit with "Time to Say Goodbye," her duet with Andrea Bocelli, constructed an album beginning with that recording and continuing in kind. The characteristics of the hit -- a lush, melodramatic, mock-operatic arrangement complete with a crescendo out of Ravel's "Bolero" and soaring voices singing in English and Italian -- are repeated here, whether the material is drawn from Puccini, the Gipsy Kings, or Queen. ~ William Ruhlmann In the ...

Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration.
