It was during the '60s that Bollywood music as it's largely recognized today began, with the masala (spicy mix) films. Throwing every style into the visual pot, they also made the soundtracks a real stew -- and, with it being that time, psychedelia was part of the mix, too. And if you want to know what the decade sounded like for Bollywood, look no further than this release, where it seems like literally everything rubs shoulders, often in a single track. Of course, the two main voices on these tracks belong to sisters Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar, the two most recorded vocalists in the world, whose career with Indian cinema dates back decades as "playback singers," as they're called. It's a glorious, often hilarious trip through the past, right from the slightly off-kilter "One, Two Three Baby" to the absolute aural madness of "Badkamma Ekad Boto Ra," where things seem to just tumble off the edge. A magical mystery tour, indeed. ~ Chris Nickson

Kings & Queens Of Bollywood album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) ...

Kings & Queens Of Bollywood songs
$14.69 French chanteuse Francoise Hardy was riding high in her popularity when this set was issued in 1975, made up of tracks from 1973 and 1974 as well. The overall feeling of Message Personnel is cinematic. There are the sweeping string arrangements of the legendary Michel Bernholc on all but one track. His direction of a basic rock band backed by a lush set of strings underlined Hardy's wispy yet compelling vocals. On the single, however, "L'Amour En Privè," Serge Gainsbourg handled production chores with musical directors J.C. Vannier and Georges Moustaki. Electric guitars roll under a sputtering ...
