U.K. reissue features eight B-sides from three singles and new sleeve notes.
SEAMONSTERS begins quietly enough with "Dalliance," as Wedding Present frontman David Gedge sings about a broken relationship in a near-whisper, over a light beat and chiming guitars. Then, almost three minutes into the song, distortion pedals are stomped on and an earthshaking torrent of noise is unleashed. This striking opener embodies both the record and the fierce Weddoes sound, marked by driving rhythms, furious six-string strums, and Gedge's signature flat vocals and lovelorn lyrics. One of the UK band's most formidable and consistent outings, SEAMONSTERS, fittingly produced by studio guru Steve Albini, includes fan favorites such as "Dare" (which ends in a swirling My Bloody Valentine-like squall), "Suck," the highly percussive "Corduroy," and the wonderfully bitter "Heather." Along with the first installment of the group's singles comp, HIT PARADE, this album is the high point of the Wedding Present's catalogue, and as an introduction to the utterly distinctive Weddoes aesthetic, there's no better disc than this one.
Originally released in 1991 now includes the 8 B-sides from three singles and new sleevenotes. Standard jewelcase in a slipcase.Spin (4/92, p.95) - Highly Recommended - "...SEAMONSTERS is a pirhana...punk for pop people..." Q (9/01, p.139) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Hints at the greater delicacy and charm Gedge was to later realize in his Cinerama project..." Alternative Press (7/95, p.80) - Ranked #18 in AP's list of the `Top 99 Of '85-'95' - "...This [is] no mere collection of dainty vague songs with screens of white noise a la the Jesus And Mary Chain. This [is] true pop with great ripping blasts. Power chords boldly interjected in startlingly angular ways right into the heart of agitated melodies..." Seamonsters album
$11.25 Emerging in 2001 on a small wave of hype touting Norway as a new musical hotbed, QUIET IS THE NEW LOUD was startling in its earnestness, even to ears that had been softened by the likes of Belle & Sebastian. Where that Scottish band tempers its twee-ness with clever, winking wordplay, Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe are more akin to a latter-day Simon & Garfunkel or a couple of Nick Drakes who are lucky to have found each other.
Disarmingly sensitive, poetic tracks such as "Parallel Lines" ("What's the immaterial substance that envelops two/That one perceives as hunger and the other as food") are sung by the duo in honeyed harmonies with a pleasantly laid-back delivery. Oye and Boe eschew drums on all but two tracks (upbeat highlights "Toxic Girl" and "Failure"), simply using layered guitars and the ...

Seamonsters music CDs
$12.45 FEAR AND WHISKEY was the album that signaled the second coming of the Mekons. Six years after their 1979 debut, the band overhauled their well-honed post-punk sound with an unexpected departure. Like the Byrds before them, the Mekons decided to forge a merger between rock and country; unlike the Byrds, of course, the Mekons infused their ragged honky-tonk with hints of reggae, art noise, and ample doses of reckless punk.
The opening "Chivalry" is a barroom tune that sounds part Celtic, part Texan, with a floating fiddle melody courtesy of Susie Honeyman. "Trouble Down South," a politically pointed song that uses spoken narrative against a backdrop of fiddle, haunting vocals, and reggae rhythms, gives way to the amped-up "Hard to Be Human Again" and the heavy, ...
| | Black Keys The Big Come Up CD (2002)
Seamonsters songs
$12.35 On paper, two Ohio white guys forming a drum-and-guitar blues duo seemed like the last thing the world needed in 2002. Fortunately, the guys revisiting the tried and true were guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney a.k.a. the Black Keys. With the former's blown-cone distortion and slinky riffs, and the latter's positively Bonham-esque way of inhabiting each change with a loose power, they smacked judgment out of one's brain before anyone ...

Meredith Bragg & the Terminals' 2005 debut album was called Volume 1, so this limited-edition EP, which follows six months later, might be thought of as Volume 1«. Or, since Volume 1 was only 37 minutes long, this might constitute the rest of it. Actually, though, the release of a half-album is well justified ...
