This Japanese compilation is packed iwth 14 demons and outtakes.
The trademark sound that made the Carpenters one of the highest charting and most beloved pop acts of the 1970s is in full effect on this collection of outtakes, demos, and live performances. The quirky compilation is threaded together by infectious melodic hooks, Karen Carpenter's evocative alto, and her brother Richard's clean, lush arrangements, all of which sound as crisp and appealing as they did in their heyday.
Excerpts from the Carpenters television specials are a key inclusion here. A medley of the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and STAR WARS movie themes, covers of "I Got Rhythm" and "You're Just in Love," and a stylized version of the 1929 standard "Without a Song" are just a few of the rarities. AS TIME GOES BY also features other pop and rock covers ("Nowhere Man," "Dancing in the Street") that are placed alongside technical experiments (a double-tracked duet between Ella Fitzgerald and Karen Carpenter). For good measure, this disc includes medleys of the Carpenters' own hits (one blends slow versions of "Superstar" and "Rainy Days and Mondays"). Even on these truncated renditions, Karen's voice pushes all the right vocal buttons and pulls the heartstrings. AS TIME GOES BY will please fans of the band's sound, and is an especially welcome treat for the world's Carpenterphiles.
Japanese compilation featuring outtakes and demos of the popular brother and sister singing duo that might have been retained for a box set, but instead are issued on this special CD. An absolute essential for Carpenters completists...and you know who you are!
The Carpenters: Karen Carpenter, Richard Carpenter.
Additional personnel: Ella Fitzgerald, Perry Como, John Davidson.
As Time Goes By Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) New stuff, after all these years ;-) Nice to hear some "new" things from the Carpeneters after years of re-mixes, re-compilations, etc. The first song, "Without A Song" is worth the price of the album alone if you're a Carp-purist. Melts me into my chair just like they did 30 years ago. What a great thing! Enjoy it like it was Yesterday Once More ;-) Submitted by a reviewer (Midwest) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

lovely legacy for karen... largely a technologically enhanced(and beautiful) presentation of their last television special "music, music, music" this CD is notable for richard carpenter's meticulous and reverent mastering of what is left of "the carpenters" considerable recorded legacy. the highpoint is definietly the karen/ella fitzgerald medley, which would have been more interesting if it had been an actual duet;(although their voices overlap and blend for a few bars, twice). To hear karen's gorgeous, vibrato-free, crystalline alto do eight bars of the haunting "my funny valentine" is reason enough to listen to this cd, and the "i let a song go out of my heart" interweaving to ella's "do nothin' till.." is great. two 1967 demos (with a 17 year old karen) of "california dreamin'" and "nowhere man" are the two other high marks of this cd which contains some misses: the carpenter/perry como medley doesn't fare well and the over-produced "hits medley" at the end is curious only for the fact that karen uses a live mic for the whole production number (she really was a flawless performer). One can't help notice how much more soulful and yearning her voice is on the '67 demos, and once again, her vast sea of fans are left wondering "If only...." --Victor Janusz; SEattle WA 2002 Submitted by vic (seattle,WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Great Songs From TV Appearances Many of the tracts of this CD are from various television appearances and from their TV specials. As such, this CD contains Carpenter's music that many have not heard and that others have not heard for a long time. All sound fantastic! The only disappointment I had is that the great duet that Karen had with John Denver in their first TV special of the song "Comin' Through The Rye/Good Vibrations" was not included. I don't understand why Richard has never released this track -- having 2 of my favorite singers singing a duet is a rare privilege. Finally, one more request (in case Mr. Carpenter is reading this), please start re-releasing your old albums on either the SACD or DVD-Audio high-resolution format, Karen's voice would sound even better than it already does on such disks. What a treat!!! I have been waiting for this release for quite some time, and I was not dissapointed. I especially loved hearing Karen sing Nowhere Man, California Dreamin', and Dancing in the Streets. I like the less polished earlier stuff.......it really shows her raw talent. I also love "Leave Yesterday Behind", what a great song! I think all the selections are great, and it's a nice variety. It also showcases Richard's genious with his beautiful arrangements. It's an absolute for any Carpenters fan, but also to anyone else that likes beautiful music and vocals. Submitted by a reviewer (Michigan) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$7.95 A SONG FOR YOU, Karen and Richard Carpenter's fourth album, is an unusual record. Alongside the usual million-selling hits, here including "Top of the World," "Hurting Each Other," "Goodbye To Love," and the film theme "Bless The Beasts And Children," A SONG FOR YOU contains a number of brief instrumentals designed to showcase Richard Carpenter's keyboard and arranging skills. Elsewhere, sibling Karen sings as beautifully as ever, and her dusky, clear alto is at its most expressive. The CD was remastered by ...

$7.85 Featuring a surprisingly poignant cover photo of a suburban house--not unlike the Downey, California homestead in which Karen and Richard Carpenter grew up--NOW AND THEN is a concept album about the music that inspired Karen and Richard in their childhood. Besides the hit single "Sing" and a charming take on Hank Williams' "Jambalaya," the centerpiece of NOW AND THEN is Richard Carpenter and John Bettis' nostalgic "Yesterday Once More.
