| | Concert For New York City CD (2 Customer Reviews)
THE CONCERT FOR NEW YORK CITY was recorded live at Madison Square Garden on October 20, 2001 in commemoration of the victims and the heroes of the September 11 World Trade Center disaster.
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Organized in less than six weeks following the attack on the World Trade Center by Paul McCartney, THE CONCERT FOR NEW YORK CITY features famous names from all over the musical map raising money for the firefighters, police officers and rescue workers who stepped up during this catastrophe. Skewed heavily towards older, predominant UK classic rock artists, this 2-CD set serves up quite a number of stellar performances starting with David Bowie's one-two punch intro of Simon & Garfunkel's "America" and his own "Heroes." Among the most pleasant surprises was an invigorated set by The Who featuring molten readings of "Who Are You," "Baba O'Reilly" and "Won't Get Fooled Again."
Other elder statesmen checking in were Elton John ("Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters"), Eric Clapton ("I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man") and Mick Jagger with Keith Richards ("Miss You," "Salt Of The Earth"). Checking in for the younger set were hip-hop superstar Jay-Z ("Izzo [H.O.V.A.]"), Goo Goo Dolls ("American Girl"), Destiny's Child ("Emotion," "Gospel Medley") and the Backstreet Boys ("Quit Playing Games [With My Heart]"). Macca's evening closing finale found him bouncing between Beatles classics ("I'm Down," "Yesterday," "Let It Be") and the inspirational sing-along "Freedom" from 2001's DRIVING RAIN.

$6.79 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins ...

Concert For New York City album
$14.42 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's ...
| | Elton John Ice On Fire CD (1985) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Concert For New York City CD music
$10.59 It seems as if Elton John was still settling on a discernable style on 1985's ICE ON FIRE. He brought in Gus Dudgeon, the architect of such elaborate, wide-screen productions as GOODBYE YELLOWBRICK ROAD, and his touch can be felt in the lush synthesized sound that dominates this record. Even the song credits, full of Simmons drums, synth-guitar, and Yamaha TX81C, attest to the slick production values.
"Nikita" was the record's Top 10 single. The sweeping melody of this gentle ode to a Russian girl rides atop a percolating rhythm track. The synthesizer-drenched sound tends to place it firmly within its era, but the pull of "Nikita"'s melody is fairly irresistible. It features backing vocals by George Michael, who was at his peak of superstardom at the time. Elsewhere on the record, Elton joins forces with the rhythm section of Queen for "Too Young." The fade of "Wrap Her Up," in which Elton sings out the names of women he'd like to wrap up and take home--ranging from Princess Caroline of Monaco to Nancy Reagan--is the record's strangest moment.
Sandwiched between 1984's Top 20 hit Breaking Hearts and 1986's commercial disaster Leather Jackets, 1985's Ice on Fire is a forgotten Elton John effort. While it is hardly a masterpiece -- it isn't even up to the standard of such '80s efforts as Too Low for Zero -- it's still an enjoyable record, living proof of the power of professionalism. John was riding high on his comeback of the early '80s and ready to turn out another record. And that's what Ice on Fire is -- another Elton John album, in the best possible sense. Sure, it does mark the reunion of John and lyricist Bernie Taupin with producer Gus Dudgeon, who helmed John's greatest recordings, but you'd never know it from the sound of the record. Ice on Fire is pure 1985, heavy on synthetic drums and keyboards -- the kind of record where Davey ...
