Daughter of the Regiment review Product Description
Daughter of the Regiment movie was released Nov 20, 2001 by the Kultur Films Inc. studio. Joan Sutherland's legendary performance in the Opera Australia production of Donizetti's masterpiece.
Donizetti's colorful and joyful comedy opera of young love - frustrated, then victorious Daughter of the Regiment video. In Italian.
TOO LATE - but still delightful A friend once very unkindly remarked of Dame Joan agreeing to be filmed at such a late stage in her career in this role that the opera should be retitled Grandmother (rather than "Daughter') of the regiment! We cannot escape the visul evidence of a woman who seems older than most of the regimental members who are supposedly her collective 'father'. The cameraman for this production was obviously not instructed by the director to avoid close-ups (as they did in Joan's late Lucia for OZ opera), but even then - the supposedly youthful stage antics are far from convincing. Still it is a wonderful record of what a great singer can do albeit towards the end of her career - the notes are all there and she shows a great sense of the comic. Anson Austin's high C's are all there too... And Grandmother or Daughter, i am grateful to have in my possession this souvenir of a great artist, even though not exactly in her prime. Good on you Joan! By gleong (Launceston, Tasmania Australia)
Joan Sutherland's legendary performance in the Opera Australia production tells a tale of young love-frustrated, then victorious.
