| | Queen Flash Gordon CD - Import Queen Discography of CDs
24 bit digitally remastered 'Abbey Road Technology Series'
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, synthesizer), Brian May (guitar, synthesizer, vocals), John Deacon (bass, guitar, synthesizer), Roger Taylor (drums, synthesizer, vocals). All songs written by members of Queen. Abbey Road Technology-remastered edition (British import). While writing and recording The Game, Queen were asked by renowned movie director Dino DeLaurentis to provide the soundtrack for his upcoming sci-fi epic Flash Gordon. The band accepted and promptly began working on both albums simultaneously. Although at first many fans criticized Flash Gordon since it was issued as an official Queen release rather than a motion picture soundtrack, it has proven to be one of rock's better motion picture soundtracks over the years. The majority of the music is instrumental, with dialogue from the movie in place of Freddie Mercury's singing (only two tracks contain lyrics), but the songwriting is still unmistakably Queen. Highlights abound, such as "Football Fight," "Vultan's Theme (Attack of the Hawkmen)," "The Wedding March," and the heavy metal roar of "Battle Theme." But it was the two more conventional songs that were the album's two best tracks -- the anthemic U.K. Top Ten hit "Flash's Theme" and the woefully underrated rocker "The Hero." With Queen involved, Flash Gordon is certainly not your average, predictable soundtrack. ~ Greg Prato FLASH GORDON was the motion picture soundtrack for the 1980 movie, released just a few months after one of Queen's most commercially successful albums, THE GAME. More synthesizer-heavy than previous releases, FLASH GORDON is comprised mostly of short instrumentals, with a pair of more traditional Queen songs bookending the album. With dialogue from the movie inserted throughout, it is easy for the listener to grasp the storyline, and to tell which scenes the songs represent. "Flash's Theme" was the soundtrack's anthemic single, which begins the album on a high note. Then the onslaught of instrumentals begins. The majority can be appreciated outside the story's context--such as "Football Fight" and "Vultan's Theme (Attack Of The Hawk Men)." Others are closely linked to the storyline--"In The Space Capsule," "In The Death Cell," "The Kiss" and "Marriage Of Dale And Ming"--but are still enjoyable. Although it doesn't quite match the majesty of an official Queen album, FLASH GORDON contains plenty of first-rate compositions, including one of their most underrated tunes, "The Hero," which closes the soundtrack.

Personnel: Tom Araya (vocals); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Audio Mixer: Greg Fidelman. Editor: Dan Monti. Photographer: Andrew Stewart. Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" ...

Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." ...

Flash Gordon
$7.79 Includes liner notes by Kevin Phinney. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch. Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Carla Thomas (vocals). Liner Note Author: Kevin Phinney. The Very Best of Otis Redding wasn't the first Otis Redding compilation but it is the best of the single-disc collections, distilling the high points across his career (up thru the posthumous hits "(Sitting' On) The Dock of the Bay" and the heartbreaking "I've Got Dreams to Remember") in 16 tracks, every one a musical milestone and a soul music high-point of one kind or another. Although aimed at the casual listener and the neophyte fan, there are some astonishing realizations to be had in listening to this disc and looking at the chart placements of the early sides, and realizing just how uniform his musical influence is -- "These Arms of Mine" and, especially, "Pain In My Heart," ...

This edition of REBIRTH includes material released by 2 predecessor bands, The Stoics and The Mind's Eye. Also includes bonus tracks originally released as 45's. The Children includes: Cassell Webb (vocals). Recorded between 1966 and 1970. Personnel: Stephen Perron, Cassell Webb (vocals); William Ash (guitar); Louis Cabaza (tuba, piano, organ, vibraphone); Andrew Szuch, Jr. (drums). Liner Note Author: David James. Recording information: Abe Epstein Studios, San Antonio, TX (10/14/1966-02/??/1967); Andrus Production, Houston, TX (10/14/1966-02/??/1967); Jones Sound Studios, Houston, TX (10/14/1966-02/??/1967); Recording Services Inc., TX (10/14/1966-02/??/1967). The first half of Rebirth is a rather phenomenal document: mood-driven and densely textured psychedelia at its very best. "Daybreak" opens the album with what seems to be a fairly quaint ditty until its controlled eruptions of orchestration, unique and enticing, cause the music to grow in dimension. "Maypole" also initially leans toward preciousness, the themes of childhood naïveté employed by dozens of bands in the wake of Sgt. Pepper's, but in its seesawing-calliope backing and minor-key shifts there is also something compellingly creepy that resonates more of shadows than innocence. It leads wonderfully into "Don't Ever Lose It," a macabre fairy tale as enigmatically disorienting as it is rocking, and the delicate "Beautiful," which (particularly owing to Stephen Perron's haunting vocals) lives up to its title in the spookiest of ways. "Sitting on a Flower," a Cassell Webb showcase, is also powerful stuff. The album's only significant failing is a tendency during its last half to lose sight of the experience it means to convey. The honky tonk parody "Military School" (which is quite interesting ...

| | Primevil Smokin' Bats At Campton's CD (1974) (Import) United Kingdom
Flash Gordon
$17.79 Boasting one of the most thinly veiled references to smoking pot this side of British act Leaf Hound, Primevil's only album, Smokin' Bats at Campton's (Dave Campton being their lead singer; "bats" being, well, you know), was originally recorded in 1974, but only found its way onto CD some 20 years later. Now, the record is frequently cited as a bona fide stoner rock touchstone (whether anyone could find a copy to be influenced by or not, in the interim), and its eight cuts run a wide gamut featuring surprisingly refined songcraft and impressive musicianship, as well as semi-improvised efforts and unfocused jam waffling. The best qualities among these are all exemplified within the opening trio set off by the standout "Leavin'," with its acoustic passages and stop-start riffs, the hard-driving "Progress," with its funky bass, wailing harp and twin guitar midsection, and the instrumental six-string showcase "Fantasies," which recalls Fly by Night-era Rush, but was in fact recorded one year earlier. On the other hand, forgettable rockers like "Pretty Woman" and "Tell Me If You Can" don't fare nearly as well, stumbling on some truly awful lyrics from Campton amid their boring, sub-Cactus-like thud. Likewise, the white-knuckled romp, "Hey Lover," was allegedly whipped together in one night -- and sounds like it, but at least it possesses a certain rough charm à la Sir Lord Baltimore. Back on firmer ground, the memorable "High Steppin' Stomper" actually shows traces of glam rock (must be that hand-clapping and boot-stomping), but ...
