Settle down, King Crimson fans, the Tony Levin playing drums here is not the KC bassman (nor is bassist Paul Rogers on holiday from Bad Company, for that matter), for Mujician is made up not of journeymen rockers, but some of England's most esteemed free jazz/avant garde improvisers. The quartet has been plying its expansive, exploratory trade for years, spearheaded by the searching saxophones of Paul Dunmall and the technicolor piano of UK jazz icon Keith Tippett. On SPACETIME, as ever, the band makes the most of its greatest asset; the ability (and inclination) to listen to one another.
The album is made up of two lengthy pieces, each broken down into several sections that find the musicians alternately kicking up a dust storm, pulling back for some pointillistic scene-setting, and creating contrapuntally woven tapestries in which each instrument's statements are balanced interdependently on the others. Ultimately, it may be restrictive to label Mujician's work anything so idiomatic as "jazz." Rather, consider SPACETIME a rich, nuanced example of modern improvisation within a jazz quartet framework.
Recorded at Victoria Rooms, Bristol, United Kingdom on February 24, 2001.
Personnel: Paul Dunmall (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Keith Tippett (piano); Paul Rogers (double bass); Tony Levin (drums).

Spacetime album
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy in practice. These choral chants hamper the hardest rocking songs here -- "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," "Victoria" -- and they're mercifully absent from the slower tunes, songs that benefit from the gentle layered harmonies. In comparison to most orchestral and choral rock albums, these arrangements are subtle and sensitive, providing a nice counterpart for the surprising dose of rock & roll, both things that make The Kinks Choral Collection one of the better entries in this curious subgenre ...

| | Dave Brubeck Time Out CD (1959) Remastered
Spacetime songs
$6.25 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's own classically oriented piano style, and the airy, delicate "Everybody's Jumpin'" showcases the lyrical splendor of saxophonist Paul Desmond. With bassist Gene Wright ...
| | Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert CD (1995)
Spacetime album
$13.69 Recorded between 1960 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1995, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York).
Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, who probably was as responsible as anyone else in rehabilitating Germany's post-war world image. The Taragon label is re-releasing all of Kaempfert's many albums in an ambitious reissue project. This excellent compilation is the one to have however.
As well as being a successful composer ("Strangers in the Night," "Spanish Eyes," "Danke Schon," "L.O.V.E" are all his compositions), Kaempfert was an even better producer, superior even to Herb Alpert in that he didn't rely as much on a formula sound as did the Tijuana Brass. His studio work is ultra-clean and efficient, and very pop-modern in the use of a prominently recorded low-strung electric guitar on all tracks. What lingers on are his memorable melodies however, sunnily displayed and all danceable ...
| | Keith Jarrett Koln Concert CD (1975)
Spacetime CD music
$13.65 Albums that sell vast quantities are not always to be recommended. This exceptional example of solo piano is the biggest selling record in the 25 year history of the pioneering jazz label ECM. It is an almost perfect recording of the art of piano dynamics, full of emotion, and throughout the hour or so duration the listener is never bored. Jarrett has repeated his concerts of improvisation hundreds of times, many have been ...
| | Immature We Got It CD (1995)
Spacetime music CDs
$10.49 Principally recorded at Westlake Studios, Los Angeles, California.
If you liked The Jackson 5 and New Edition, you'll LOVE Immature. "Feel the Funk" was the name of their first hit from WE GOT IT, and that's more or less what the boys do on this fine disc of well-executed, '90s-style funk/hip-hop. Teen romance is the subject, mid-tempo is the groove, and Marques, Jerome and Kelton deliver on all fronts. More than a teeny-bopper outfit, the group possesses a real feel for their music, always concocting a consistent, well-produced sound. "Baby Please Don't Go," maybe the album's strongest track, displays the vigorous vocal talents of Marques "Batman" Houston's voice. His is a developing instrument, obviously not mature yet; but like a kid named Michael Jackson before him, Houston shows a knack for being at once smooth and gutsy. No one in this band is over 15, but you might not know that from the songs alone. In other words, Immature don't live up to their chosen name, and their audience should be very pleased with the results.
Ori Release '95 , third album from the R&B Boyz trio featuring Marques Houston.
Producers include: Chris Stokes, Sean "The Mystro" Mather, Claudio Cueni, Mike Dean, Lamonte Lassiter.
Engineers: Chris Stokes, Claudio Cueni, Mark Abetz.

| | Nadine Goellner Sing It To Me Anyway CD (2005)
Spacetime music CDs
$18.95 One of the strongest indie releases of 2004 was this effort from a little-known NYC singer/songwriter, Sing It to Me Anyway, the follow-up to the limited-release Remember My Name, which presents Nadine Goellner as a remarkably talented vocalist who successfully fuses her jazz and acoustic folk leanings into a solid body of work. Pitch-perfect, pristine in its harmonizing tonal sound -- this could scarcely be a more technically solid vocal effort. Goellner's cool writing style and recurrent stays at New York's Living Room club make for facile comparisons to Norah Jones, but where Jones' approach has more of a standards feel, Goellner's feels wholly contemporary. She's at her best when sticking with straightforward, familiar ways of expressing her emotions in lyrics; it's her restrained yet assured deliveries and musical accompaniment that make the songs special. The best example is the title cut, the most fully realized tune on the album, which benefits from a lovely string arrangement from Ralph Ferris that enlivens the elegant acoustic melody beneath it. Also recommended are a pair of love songs, "Sarah" and "So What," that could easily attract a dedicated lesbian following but really transcend sexual boundaries. The tunes "Wherever I Go" and "Sometimes (So Lost)" are also highlights, demonstrating Goellner's knack for simpatico interplay with drummer Lance Carter, backing vocalist Natalia Zukerman, and saxophonist Steve Welsh. A glowing serenity envelopes this album, proving that fine art isn't borne solely of suffering. Sing It to Me Anyway didn't get the attention it deserved upon its mid-2004 release, but it is absolutely worth seeking out for fans of the acoustic jazz-pop genre. ~ Joseph McCombs

| | Andrew Hill Blue Black CD (1975)
Spacetime songs
$13.19 Andrew Hill's Blue Black was one of a series of recordings that he made during the 1970s for the Japanese label East Wind. This 1975 session consists of five challenging originals; joining the pianist are saxophonist Jimmy Vass, bassist Chris White, and drummer Leroy Williams. "Golden Spook" is a dense, moody composition full of twists. The somewhat delicate "Mist Flower" showcases Vass on flute, contrasting with the furious "Remnants," a post-bop vehicle leaning toward free jazz. "Blue Black," with Vass playing soprano sax, has a Caribbean rhythm ...
