Initial pressings of BEN FOLDS LIVE included a bonus DVD disc.
For his mid-2002 tour, unabashed popster and nouveau piano man Ben Folds decided to do "something a little different." Outside of occasional guest appearances, it was just Folds on stage with his wispy voice and his grand piano. However, as anyone who's ever seen Folds could imagine, the shows were far from stale or restrained or spare, but raucous and rousing and rowdy as the slight Folds relentlessly, torrentially pounded away at the keys and whipped the crowd into frenzy upon frenzy. BEN FOLDS LIVE, recorded at various spots on the tour, accurately captures this spirit.
BEN FOLDS LIVE takes a cross-section of his budding career, drawing from both his first solo record, new songs, and his days fronting trio Ben Folds Five and makes some surprising choices. BF5 hits "Brick" and "Army" are featured, but the singles from the solo album are absent, as is the crowdpleasing "Song For The Dumped" (it does show up on the DVD with the first 100,000 copies). There is an organic feeling to the record, as on an improptu and downright beautiful version of "Emaline," and a faithful cover of the Elton John classic "Tiny Dancer." BEN FOLDS LIVE perfectly represents the raw energy of this distinctive singer-songwriter.
Personnel includes: Ben Folds (vocals, piano); John McCrea (vocals).Uncut (12/02, p.148) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...LIVE is one of the most refreshing live LPs of recent times..." CMJ (12/02, p.56) - "...Seamless and natural, a credit to Folds's unforced virtuosity on the ivories and easy rapport with a crowd..." Ben Folds Live
$7.59 For ROCKIN' THE SUBURBS, Ben Folds has subtracted two from Ben Folds Five (bassist Robert Sledge & drummer Darren Jessee) and the remainder is one. While math may not be Folds' strong point, penning witty, intelligent pop tunes has been his forte from the beginning. With his solo debut, he proves himself eminently capable outside the safe structure of his able band. Of all the 70's/80's pop icons to which Folds is frequently compared (i.e. Billy Joel, Elton John, Joe Jackson), Todd Rundgren rings the truest. If one extends that comparison, "Still Fighting It" (with its instantly memorable refrain "it sucks to grow up") is Folds's "Hello It's Me," a somewhat simple yet subtly moving and eminently catchy ballad made for radio play.
On the title track, Folds proves he hasn't entirely grown beyond the goofball humor that first captured his audience's attention ("y'all ...

| | Elvis Costello Cruel Smile CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Ben Folds Live
$16.65 CRUEL SMILE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album.
CRUEL SMILE is a limited-edition companion piece to Elvis Costello's other 2002 release WHEN I WAS CRUEL, which was a return to rock-oriented tunes after dalliances with Anne Sofie Von Otter and Burt Bacharach. The main ties to WHEN I WAS CRUEL are a handful of live recordings of songs from that album and some remixed versions. Beyond those, CRUEL SMILE lives and breathes on its own, offering "When I Was Cruel No. 1," where it's predecessor contained only "No. 2," which is an entirely different composition. Elvis covers the Charlie Chaplin chestnut "Smile" in two different versions, includes live versions of some of his own classics like "Watching the Detectives" and "Uncomplicated," and ...
| | Bob Dylan Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Live 1975-The Rolling Thunder Review CDs (2002)
Ben Folds Live
$15.79 Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue can be seen as a reaction to his tour of the year before with the Band. Playing arenas in a pressurized atmosphere left little room for the kind of happy musical accidents that were so central to Dylan's live ethos. Rolling Thunder was more suited to his mercurial vision; a spontaneously planned and executed series of gigs with an odd assortment of players in a ragtag ...
