Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Academy Awards; English Subtitles; Behind The Scenes Tender coming-of-age tale about a teenage boy who's spending the summer of 1942 in Long Island with his two buddies. He meets an alluring older woman whose husband is abroad serving in World War II. The two begin a relationship, leading to the young man's first sexual encounter, an event that changes the teenager's perspective forever. Gently nostalgic, Robert Mulligan's tender and insightful look at three teenage boys' approach to the mysteries of love and sex takes place on the coast of New England during World War II. While his two friends devote their time to investigating the process of getting laid, Hermie finds himself falling in love with the young wife of a U.S. serviceman away at the war. Stumbling over their misconceptions, fears, and ignorance, the boys fumble their way toward adulthood during their last summer of youth and innocence. Noted for his skill with young actors, Robert Mulligan (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD) draws out the insecurities of growing up from his cast and will touch viewers reminiscing about their own coming of age. THE SUMMER OF '42 was originally rated R by the MPAA, but was re-rated PG a year later.
Michel Legrand's film score garnered a 1972 Oscar win for Best Original Dramatic Score; in 1998 he was awarded the Henry Mancini Award by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
The boys in the cast reprised their roles in the sequel, THE CLASS OF '44.
Film was originally rated R by the MPAA, but was re-rated PG a year later.

Summer Of '42 Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Coming of Age This movie was a favorite of my husband's. It felt the scene of the young man on a movie date was hillarious. He was so moved by the movie and the youg man's feelings and experiences that he went out and bought the book to read. This reaction from a non reader. A sweet tale of lost innocence A classic tale of crossing over the threshold of young, male adulthood. It absolutely pegs this awkward experience with incisive perception...and does it without having to resort to scraping the bottom of the dialogue "potty". A remarkably accurate portrayal of teen-age coming of age. This movie certainly must have inspired director,Tod Williams, in the adaptation of John Irving's novel, "A Widow for One Year", into the recent film, "Door In The Floor". '42 is one of only 6 or 7 "keepers" in my classic movie collection. Submitted by wrixlix (Monroe, LA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An excellent cast and a wondeful movie This movie may be set in 40's America but it is timeless in its portrayal of the emotions that arise in the passage from "boyhood" to "manhood". Jennifer O'Neill has never looked better and Gary Grimes as "Hermie" excels as the "smitten" teenager trying to come to terms with his latent emotions and sexual feelings. The film has some wonderful moments especially the scene where "Hermie" goes to the Drugstore to buy his first packet of condoms! Any viewer male or female will identify with the "rites of passage" that took place during their teenager years. The supporting cast are first rate, especially Jerry Houser & Oliver Tennant, whilst the photography, subtle sets and colours will transport your senses througout this enjoyable tale. The music score by Academy Award Winner Michel Legrand is haunting and you will "humming" the main theme song well after the movie is over.I love this movie and know you will too. $12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this ...
