MY FAVORITE THINGS is a landmark album in jazz history. On the previous year's GIANT STEPS, Coltrane had established his credentials as a bebop master, composer and group leader. By 1960, he was ready to move on. On MY FAVORITE THINGS, Coltrane is in transition, searching for another level to which to raise his music. A new group featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums supports Coltrane on this experiment in non-Western harmonics and controlled dissonance.

Unlike some of Coltrane's later recordings, MY FAVORITE THINGS contains plenty of melodic elements, enough to please audiences mystified by free jazz. MY FAVORITE THINGS sounds most like a typical 1950s jazz album on the Cole Porter ballad "Everytime We Say Goodbye," which Coltrane and company treat sweetly and lovingly. On the other three cuts--the title track and two Gershwin compositions, "Summertime" and "But Not For Me"--the ensemble picks up the tempo and infuses the tunes with a passionate frenzy. The band is brilliant throughout, Tyner providing particularly stellar support with both his rhythmic chord comping and melodic soloing. MY FAVORITE THINGS belongs in any jazz fan's record collection.

UK expanded edition reissue of landmark 1960 album includes 2 bonus tracks. WSM. 2005.

Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on October 21, 24 & 26, 1960. Includes liner notes by Bill Coss.

Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); McCoy Tyner (piano); Steve Davis (bass); Elvin Jones (drums).

Mojo (Publisher) (p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[F]resh and utterly priceless."

Miles Davis We Want Miles CD  (1982)

My Favorite Things album
CD $9.79  5 stars
This is a specially imported limited edition 20-bit digital remaster from Japan. Recorded live at Kix, Boston, Massachusetts on June 27, 1981; Avery Fisher Hall, New York, New York on July 5, 1981; Tokyo, Japan on October 4, 1981. This 1981 live recoringof legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis features a band including Mike Stern on guitar, Marcus Miller on bass and guitar, Al Foster on drums, Bill Evans on saxophones, and Mino Cinelu on percussion. Five tracks in all. Davis's second recording since ending his six-year retirement was one of his best of the 1980s. Unlike his bands from the 1970s, this particular unit leaves plenty of space and plays much more melodically. Guitarist Mike Stern lets loose some fury, but electric bassist Marcus Miller is not reluctant to walk now and then in a straight-ahead fashion, drummer Al Foster and percussionist Mino Cinelu are tasteful, and Bill Evans gets in a few good spots on soprano. As for Davis, he was gradually regaining his earlier form. This double LP is highlighted by "Back Seat Betty," a side-long investigation of "My Man's Gone Now" and two versions of Davis's childlike "Jean Pierre." ~ Scott Yanow Recorded ...

Band of Gypsys drummer Buddy Miles found solo success with the single "Them Changes," the title cut from this infectious eight-track album that's been digitally remastered. This 1970 release by former Band of Gypsy's drummer Buddy Miles is, quite simply, one of the great lost treasures of soul inspired rock music. From the funky drive of the title track to Miles' plaintive singing on "I Still Love You, Anyway" and Greg Allman's "Dreams," the album is filled with the best qualities of both genres. Not only does Miles prove himself to be a great interpretor of songs, but with the title track and "Heart's Delight," he demonstrates his ability to write solid ...

Airto Moreira Free CD  (1972) Import

My Favorite Things music CDs
CD $10.49  Top 500
Airto Moreira's first album for Creed Taylor's nascent jazz-fusion label CTI contributed magnificently to Taylor's modus operandi--expanding the boundaries of jazz to include elements of indigenous cultures, rock, and even classical modes. FREE is Airto in full, unencumbered flight. His version of Chick Corea's own genre-defining classic "Return to Forever" sets the listener adrift in a choppy sea of vocal atmospheres, crests of electric piano, and Airto's simmering squall lines of percussion. The title track conjures the Brazilian rainforest with a thick underbrush of rhythm, tribal howls, and chatter. Airto and his cohorts play a wonderful array of ceremonial woodblocks, wood flutes, and other natural Brazilian noisemakers. Accompanying the percussionist are such stellar figures as Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter, and George Benson. 2004 remastered ...

Covering the later years of Guitar Slim's rather short career, this 15-track compilation consists of tracks recorded from 1955 until the bluesman's death in 1959. Though most fans agree that Guitar Slim's earlier sessions for Specialty Records are the high point of his career, THE ATCO SESSIONS cherrypicks the best tunes from his tenure at Atco, leaving ...

Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD  (2006) Bonus Tracks

My Favorite Things album
CD $17.79
Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with fuzz guitars, wah wahs, clavinets and horn sections, but of the two, Nutbush City Limits is a bit closer to gritty deep soul thanks to a slow-burning cover of Dobie Gray's country-soul classic "Drift Away," the gospel-fied "That's My Purpose," a churning, funky reworking of "You Are My Sunshine," and, of course, the hard-driving title track, which mythologizes Tina's country upbringing. Of course, "rootsy" in this context is a relative term, since Nutbush City Limits still feels like '70s funk even with all the country flourishes; songs as greasy as the frenzied "Make Me Over" and down-and-dirty as "Get It Out of Your Mind," Ike's two originals here, guarantee that, as does an insane hard-rocking reclaiming of "River Deep, Mountain High" that plays like a spit in Phil Spector's eye. As such, Nutbush City Limits feels like a celebration ...

Herb Alpert Christmas Album CD  (1968) Remastered; Special Edition

My Favorite Things CD music
CD $9.79  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Despite the sometimes syrupy background vocals (courtesy of arranger Shorty Rogers), CHRISTMAS ALBUM is a fairly straightforward Herb Alpert outing, with plenty of uptempo numbers given the Brass's good ole Mexican cantina treatment. The rub here, naturally, is that the set is full of yuletide tunes, so "Winter Wonderland," "Sleigh Ride," and even "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" come across as swinging and sunny. With the exception of "La Mananitas," the album is comprised of traditional Christmas favorites. The combination of holiday favorites and Alpert's cheery south-of-the-border vibe works surprisingly well--which is why the album hit #1 on the Billboard chart in 1968, '69, and '70, and continues to please today. The 2005 reissue features a lengthy booklet full of notes ...

Dave Holland Prime Directive CD  (2000)

My Favorite Things music CDs
CD $14.55  Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
PRIME DIRECTIVE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album by an Individual or Group. You may have to wait a while between Dave Holland-led releases, but it's always worth it. Tremendous taste prevents Holland from making unsatisfying music. He is a great leader in the truest senses of the word -- he gives his team space, trusts their abilities and judgment, yet all the while remains firmly in command and infuses the results with his own style and personality. Prime Directive is a wonderful jazz album. These 77 minutes and nine tracks do not cheat or disappoint. The straight-ahead tunes -- composed by double-bassist Holland and his talented band mates (one each) -- all bear Holland's distinctive rhythmic patterns and harmonics. A fine example is the title track, on which Robin Eubanks on trombone and Chris Potter on saxophones hold a stimulating musical conversation over the rhythm section's driving groove. For listeners who prefer a more deliberate pace, there's the searching, contemplative "Make Believe," with Steve Nelson's lovely vibraphone work appointing the mood. On the hopeful, "A Seeking Spirit," fans will be tapping along to the rhythmic feast offered up by the leader and his pace-setting partner Billy Kilson on drums. The melancholy "Candlelight Vigil" presents Holland at his bowed best. Finally, "Wonders Never Cease" finds the entire band at the height of their collective, ...

Bob Wolf Soup Nieske's My Desire CD  (1993)

My Favorite Things songs
CD $10.15  Audio Samples
Bassist Bob Nieske's recording for GM (recorded in 1993 but released in 1996) is most notable for its subtle surprises. Although avant-garde in places, the performances are full of strong lyrical melodies, a quirky brand of swing and logical unpredictability. Nieske, who starts the set with a somber solo bass tribute to Charlie Haden and concludes it with his feature "My Desire," wrote nine of the 11 selections including tributes to Jimmy Giuffre, Charles Ives and the obscure pianist Dick Twardzik. There is also a heated swing version of "I Found A New Baby" (featuring for some odd reason two baritones) and Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso." In the quintet Jim Cameron generally plays alto (with one appearance apiece on tenor and baritone), Tom Hall is mostly on tenor (with a bit of baritone), ...

Gilfema are a cooperative trio featuring West African guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke, Swiss-born Italian resident bassist Massimo Biolcati, and Hungarian drummer Ferenc Nemeth. All three equally split compositional credits, which is not so much a distinction in terms of the overall sound they agree upon. It's modal world music in general -- expressive, joyous, emotionally introspective, acoustically based, jazz inspired, and individualistic. The sounds are soaring, beautifully conceived, and concisely executed. As in the case of "Dream" and "Gbede Temin" in 6/8, "Vera" in 5/4, and "Tinmin" in 13/8, the employed complex time signatures melded with probing, exploratory minimalism appear simple and seemingly effortless. There's an easy swaying ...
