The Saints circa the early 21st century no longer feature many bandmembers who were spotted on their classic 1977 release, I'm Stranded -- in fact, the lone holdover is singer/guitarist Chris Bailey. But Bailey and a group of hired guns have been known to sporadically issue Saints albums, and 2002 saw the release of Spit the Blues Out. And regardless of a quite valid argument -- if the presence of a lone original member warrants the use of a band's name -- Spit the Blues Out is a heck of a dirty rock & roll album. Instead of focusing on their early garage punk sound, '60s-era blues-rock has now taken its place, as evidenced by the Animals-esque album opener, "A Gentleman Came Walking," while "Where Did My Mind Go?" brings to mind '60s Brit-pop and "Who's Been Talking" is reminiscent of early Stooges (à la the track "1969"). Although not all of it hits the mark (was an umpteenth cover of "Before You Accuse Me" really necessary?), Spit the Blues Out will certainly not tarnish the Saints' name. ~ Greg Prato
This is Chris Baily and the Saints at their primal blues wailin best, embracing their blues rootswholeheartedly with gritty interpretations of blues classics by Howlin Wolf, Elmore James, BoDiddley and Slim Harpo, alongside authentic originals in the same style. | | Gary Numan Jagged CD (2006)
Spit The Blues Out album
$12.95 On 2006's JAGGED, influential synth-pop artist Gary Numan is firmly entrenched in the dark side. This ominous studio outing finds the British singer/multi-instrumentalist focused on atmosphere more than catchy hooks (a la his lone hit "Cars"), seemingly picking up where David Bowie left off on 1995's OUTSIDE (minus that disc's busy narrative conceit). Numan is clearly committed to weighty industrial arrangements on this album, as best evidenced on the heavy, brooding "Halo," which washes listeners in a wave ...

Spit The Blues Out songs
$13.55 BURNSIDE ON BURNSIDE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Mississippi blues guitarist/singer R.L. Burnside is simply a force of nature. His raw, driving style seems as effortless as it is infectious. Here, he's captured in his most effective format--live performance. Accompanied only by grandson Cedric Burnside on drums and disciple Kenny Brown on second guitar, R.L. tears the house down with his stomping, literally and figuratively electric sound. The band's M.O. is to set up a minimal, hypnotic groove, whether fast and furious or insinuatingly slow, and gloriously pound out variations on it until the ...

Spit The Blues Out music CDs
$13.85 Ex-Abunai! drummer Joe Turner's first solo move was discreet: a self-released CD-Rom EP entitled Dollar Star. Between Two Seconds contains the seven songs released on that EP, plus four more, and constitutes his official full-length solo debut. The album requires some getting used to. It's not that it is difficult (far from it, actually) or poorly recorded (on the contrary, impressive production), but Turner's songs tend to remain in the background on first listen. Only after a few listens does Between Two Seconds open up its thick arrangements to let you in. The melodies and lyrics are often slightly too "psychedelic pop/rock" generic to make a strong impression, but what saves the album and empowers it with a good replay value are the consistency of the songwriting (not a single bad track) and the richness of the arrangements. A multi-instrumentalist himself, Turner also brought a number of friends into the studio, including ex-Olivia Tremor Control Bill Doss, ex-Abunai! guitarist Brendan Quinn and flutist Ajda Snyder aka the Turkish Queen.) If these fine musicians add specific touches to specific songs, what reigns on this album is Turner's resourcefulness in the studio: from mic'ing techniques for the drums to vocal effects, from guitar pedals to synth patches; each song offers a new sound palette and every listen brings forth a different shade, like a guitar track previously gone unnoticed. In the end, songs like "When Will You Wake Up?," "Turn Me Upside Down" and "Perfect the First Time" make their nest in your brain and you start wondering why Between Two Seconds didn't hit you hard the first time around. It does lack devastating hooks, killer guitar solos or mind-expanding lyrics. But Turner can ...
