Chris Barnes, Erin Blunt, Joyce Van Patten, Tatum O'Neal, Vic Morrow, Walter Matthau - Director: Michael Ritchie A carefree and touching story about a down-and-out Little League baseball team, The Bears, that is rescued by a cigar-chomping, beer-guzzling former pitcher (Walter Matthau). Tatum O'Neal co-stars as the ace pitcher who helps save the day. An incredibly entertaining comedy about a hopeless little league team that eventually scores big when it acquires a new coach. One of director Michael Ritchie's most universally recognized comedies, THE BAD NEWS BEARS is a film that continues to entertain audiences of all ages. The story concerns a hopeless Little League team that eventually scores big when it acquires a new coach, Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau), a grouchy, beer-guzzling pool cleaner who takes the position for some extra cash. When he realizes that his players are a bunch of talentless misfits, he signs up two secret weapons: Amanda Whurlitzer (Tatum O'Neal), the daughter of an ex-girlfriend who also happens to be an awesome pitcher, and Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley), a motorcycle-riding punk who is inarguably the best player in the area. With their new lineup in place, the Bears breeze their way into the championship game, in which they must battle their rivals, the Yankees, in order to exact revenge and win the title.
Matthau's Buttermaker is a gem of a character, tossing off cynical one-liners with a vehemence that is truly hysterical. Ritchie strikes further gold with his youthful cast, who all embody their characters with a comic realism that is both heartwarming and humorous, making THE BAD NEWS BEARS one of the finest sports comedies ever made. The film's final game was shot in Houston's famous Astrodome.
The film went on to spawn two sequels--THE BAD NEWS BEARS IN BREAKING TRAINING (1977) and THE BAD NEWS BEARS GO TO JAPAN (1978)--in addition to a television series in 1979.
Bad News Bears Reviews: "...One of the best baseball movies ever made. It nails the overzealous-kids'-coach syndrome as well as any film ever has; ditto for its golden-sun look of a 4 o'clock diamond..."

AMERICAN GRAFFITI presents a powerful collage of youth on the brink of maturity just before the assassination of J.F.K.. Based on George Lucas's own teenage hot-rodding days in Modesto, California, this brilliant, bittersweet comedy inspired numerous other productions, including the long-running TV series HAPPY DAYS. Lucas's second feature film (following THX 1138), AMERICAN GRAFFITI contains an early screen appearance by Harrison Ford, who would figure heavily in the director's next movie, the sci-fi epic STAR WARS. The film follows one night in the lives of several recently graduated high school students. The genial Steve (Ron Howard) prepares to leave for college the next day, and Laurie (Cindy Williams), his girlfriend, is upset by his impending departure. Laurie's brother, Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), the class intellectual, is also slated for college, but he has serious doubts about his future. Also included here are the hopeless nerd (Charles Martin Smith) and the eternally cool drag racer, John (Paul LeMat), who feels pressure to live up to his reputation. A nostalgic feeling is evoked in seeing ...

| | M*A*S*H DVD (1970) Widescreen
Bad News Bears film
$10.49 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), ...
| | Better Living Through Circuitry DVD (1999)
Bad News Bears review
$10.19 An intelligent and analytical documentary, BETTER LIVING THROUGH CIRCUITRY presents an intellectual overview of Rave culture. (A Rave is an all-night dance party to electronic music attended by large groups of teenagers.) Using organized montages of interviews with club kids, party promoters, and musicians, the film examines the history of Rave's techno music, and incorporates performance footage of musicians. Interviews with the now-ubiquitous Moby, Wolfgang Flur of Kraftwerk, and former punk-rocker and Acid House "inventor" Genesis P-Orridge (an eloquent British transvestite), explain the idea of Raves as restorative rituals, that emphasize community and spirituality (DJ Spooky elaborates), and the musical and scientific connection between traditional shaman drum circles and techno music. The wide prevalence of drug use is also discussed as are the use of advertising logos for posters and party invites, and the way that the teens embrace childish habits--carrying pacifiers, ...
