Import remastered reissue of the long running Dutch rock act's 1975 album that's out-of-print domestically.
On To the Hilt, Golden Earring fully gives themselves over to the prog rock tendencies that they had toyed with throughout the 1970s. The resulting album has a strong prog feel but lacks the characteristic sound and the solid material that defined the group's best efforts to that point. The band puts in a typically energetic and thunderous performance, but their strong instrumental chops can't overcome the self-indulgent nature of much of the album's material: "Why Me?" and "Latin Lightning" are a few of the potentially interesting songs on To the Hilt that are undercut by dull, overlong sections of jamming. Said songs also lack the tight arrangements and the sudden, surprising instrumental twists that made the group's past epics so interesting. The album's rigorous pursuit of a full-blooded art rock sound results in this album lacking the distinctive, easily identifiable sound that infused Golden Earring classics like "Radar Love" or "She Flies on Strange Wings." Despite these problems, some good songs shine through. The album's best songs tend to be the shortest ones: "Facesitter" is a strong rocker built on an interesting blend of synthesizer and acoustic guitar and the title track pursues a galloping country-rock groove that made it a favorite in concert. However, high points like these are separated by long stretches of complex but faceless jamming that makes To the Hilt a chore to get through. As a result, this album is virtually guaranteed to leave the casual listener cold and can only be recommended to the most hardcore of Golden Earring fans. ~ Donald A. Guarisco

| To The Hilt Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Perfect Earring Album This has always been my favorite Golden Earring album. I've been a longtime fan of the band, and "To The Hilt" still stands up as one of the most unique records by the band.It seemed, at the time(1975), to be the perfect synthesis of the Earring Sound, the band coming of age as it were, with a new intensity, musically and lyrically, as well.
This album is smart. The musicianship is impeccable. And the album as a whole fits into it's own category - as if the band were under a magic spell to concoct the perfect record, and they truly suceeded with this one. Now that it's been remastered, I hope it gets some attention, because I've seen dozens of discarded copies in used record stores over the years(I've gone through several vinyl pressings of To The Hilt myself!) - but I highly recommend this one to anyone who wants to discover how great this band is. The performances are some of the best, Cesars drumming in particular, and Georges guitar licks are perfect. This band has always played well, and I'd have to say that the recording is EQ'd for a quieter/ velvety sound so it's not as crisp as I'd hoped from a remaster, but the performance is still, in my estimation, downright magickal at points, (like Nomad, and Sleepwalking, hear the syncopation and wonder at the intuitiveness)- GET IT!!!

A jewel of the era that is sadly overlooked! Ask anyone old enough if they remember Golden Earring, the answer you'll probably get is "Oh yeah...love that "Radar Love" song! Odds are that person won't know the name of the LP "Radar Love" was on (hint: "Moontan) so don't bother asking if they have "To the Hilt" in their record collection. Because of the business of doing business, less than half of Golden Earrings records were even released domestically in the USA. The songwriting and lyrics on "To the Hilt" are inventive and the musicianship is fantastic. I'm not going to hold your hand and talk you through each song. If you're reading this you must want to know more. Some songs are foot tapping head bobbers, while others can be somber and emotional. If you want to hear a song that gets you going like "Radar Love" does...play "Radar Love" for pete sakes! I'm not much of a writer as you can tell! I'm just putting in a good word for Golden Earring. (A band that...for the record...formed in the 60's and just recently released and album of all new material.) I've had the good fortune of seeing them once live in Chicago back in the 80's and because of the lack of U.S. fan support, that will probably the last time. Take "To the Hilt," TO THE MAX! | | Kelly Clarkson Breakaway CD (2004)
To The Hilt CD music
$9.59 With 2003's THANKFUL, Kelly Clarkson proved that her AMERICAN IDOL win was no fluke by putting out a solid album of gospel-influenced R&B performed with the panache of a seasoned veteran. In late 2004, the Texas native delivered on the promise of her sophomore record's title, BREAKAWAY, by diving headfirst into alternative-rock-flavored pop of the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch variety. Though there are still a few R&B-inspired moments here ("Because of You" is a soulful, string-laced ballad in the best Mariah Carey tradition), most of the album has a much harder edge than fans of THANKFUL would likely expect. In other spots, Clarkson goes the moody chanteuse route, particularly on "Addicted," where she channels the spooky melancholy of Fiona Apple with surprising conviction. Clarkson herself co-writes several songs on the disc, which, combined with the record's unexpected musical variety, suggests a talented vocalist coming into her own as an artist as well as a performer.
Kelly Clarkson was the first American Idol winner and the first vocalist to achieve success, but her 2003 debut, Thankful, didn't completely define her outside of the parameters of the show. While the dance-pop and adult contemporary ballads on that record were fresher than the music on AmIdol, Clarkson still hadn't escaped the show's shadow entirely: since it was a hit so close to her time on TV, it was easy to pigeonhole her as simply a creation of television, not a popular singer in her own right. So, her second album, Breakaway, released late in 2004, was a pivotal moment for her, a chance to prove that she was not a one-hit wonder, a chance to prove that she could have a real, vibrant career. Happily, Breakaway delivers on that promise. This time around, the dance-pop elements have been almost entirely stripped away, and the record instead is a rock-influenced, MOR pop affair, not entirely dissimilar to Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, only a little bit smoother and not as heavy on guitars. Since Clarkson is a better singer than Simpson -- not only does she possess more chops, but she has more on-record charisma -- she can sell the material even when the slow tempos in the middle of record drag its momentum; she prevents the songs from sounding too samey. While there may be one too many ballads here, they ...
| | Michelle Shocked Don't Ask Don't Tell CD (2005) Digipak
To The Hilt music CDs
$10.69 At the same time, while an earthy folk-rock sound dominates the album, there's still plenty of diversity here. Shocked throws in New Orleans R&B ("Don't Tell"), jazzy balladry ("Goodbye"), and high-octane garage-rock ("Hi Skool"). Lyrically, Shocked seamlessly meshes the personal and the political in a manner that's become her trademark, employing detail-oriented, literary-minded touches for maximum impact. DON'T ASK DON'T TELL is at once the most straightforward and the most complex of the prolific artist's 2005 releases.
There are three things you need to know about Michelle Shocked. Number one, she possesses an outsized ambition; number two, she abhors unfinished business; and number ...
