Victor Herbert: The Red Mill
$13.79 Founded in 1988, the Irish Repertory Theatre of New York is an off-Broadway theater company that generally spends its time reviving the works of Irish playwrights like Sean O'Casey and Brendan Behan, though it also extends its charter to cover writers of Irish lineage, such as Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, and Eugene O'Neill. Still, doing Finian's Rainbow is a stretch, as it was written by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, nobody's idea of an Irishman, and it is a musical to boot (the music is by Burton Lane). Nevertheless, the plot does concern two expatriate Irish citizens (and a leprechaun) set loose in a mythical American South, and when the company launched its stripped-down two-piano version of the 1947 Broadway show on April 14, 2004, it attracted good reviews. Off-Broadway shows generally do not result in cast recordings, either, but, as a sleeve note to this one reveals, "This album was produced through the extraordinary generosity of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick." Presumably, then, the acting couple who have made a mint in movies and TV (Broderick hasn't done bad with Broadway's The Producers, either) financed the recording. They are to be thanked for preserving a spirited performance led by Melissa Errico, ...

Victor Herbert: The Red Mill
$11.69 Columbia Records president and producer Goddard Lieberson, who, in addition to bringing many original Broadway cast albums to Columbia from the mid-'40s on also made a point of recording studio cast albums of vintage Broadway musicals that had never been recorded before or had been recorded by other companies, had good reasons to put together his own version of Brigadoon ten years after its Broadway premiere. The show had been recorded by rival RCA Victor Records shortly before the advent of the LP era on five 78s, so the original Broadway cast album contained only ten tracks and ran less than 33 minutes. The show had been turned into a movie in 1954, but the resulting original soundtrack album released by MGM Records was even shorter, less than 28 minutes. Further, by 1957 the 12" LP era had dawned, and with it so-called "high fidelity" recording. Thus, Columbia was able to promote its 45-minute studio-cast recording of Brigadoon, made in July 1957 and released in 1958, as a "new performance which contains many hitherto unrecorded selections," adding that it "presents the exciting...score for the first time in high fidelity and for the first time at such length, providing at last an extended survey of its riches." There would be longer and higher fidelity ...
| | Roberta CD (1952) Original Soundtrack
Victor Herbert: The Red Mill
$12.95 Original Cast Recording/Original Studio Cast: Joan Roberts, Stephen Douglass, Frank Rogier (vocals); Jack Cassidy , Kaye Ballard, Portia Nelson.
Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach's musical Roberta, based on Alice Duer Miller's novel Gowns by Roberta, about an American football player who inherits a Paris dress shop, was a modest success when it opened on Broadway on November 18, 1933, running 295 performances and spawning hits in the songs "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Yesterdays," and "The Touch of Your Hand." The show was sold to RKO Pictures as a movie vehicle for Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and the 1935 movie version retained only four songs from the stage score, while bringing in considerable new material written by Kern and Dorothy Fields, including "Lovely to Look At" and a revised version of "I Won't Dance," a song Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II had written for another show, The Three Sisters. Cast and soundtrack albums were largely unknown in the 1930s, and the first notable recording of the score was a 1944 studio-cast album undertaken by Decca that featured Kitty Carlisle and Alfred Drake. But in the early 1950s, MGM, which had acquired ...

Victor Herbert: The Red Mill
$28.69 This is the third Victor Herbert operetta to be released by Albany Records based on a live performance by the Ohio Light Opera, which is associated with the University of Wooster. The opera lies somewhere between a college and a professional company, but its productions aim to revive and preserve Herbert's works of the early 20th century somewhat in the manner they were first presented on Broadway. As with the prior efforts, Naughty Marietta and The Red Mill, artistic director Steven Daigle has worked to re-create the shows as originally heard as much as possible, while making them accessible to contemporary audiences. In the case of Sweethearts, that has meant changing, by his estimate, 20 percent of the dialogue written by Harry B. Smith and Fred de Gresac, while keeping Herbert's music (in its original orchestrations) and Robert B. Smith's lyrics intact. A Broadway hit in 1913 starring Christie MacDonald (with revivals in 1929 and 1947) and a successful film (with a seriously altered plot) in 1938 starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, the show has had a good life, but this is the first full-length recording on CD. Daigle directs his principals ...

Victor Herbert: The Red Mill
$17.99 Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841), was the true promoter of the Parisian \"Guitaromania\", his prestige remained unfortunatly and inexplicably tied for a long time to didactic production and to the well known \"methods\", op. 27 and 241. Nevertheless, thanks to a careful interest in recent years and the subsequent discovery of many unknown works, new light is shining on the composer. This CD presents a significant selection of solo pieces that covers nearly all of Carulli\'s Parisian creative span. In addition, we find the special occasion to be able to listen some singular pieces for voice and guitar dedicated to the celebrated Madame Grassini (Napoleonic \"imperial singer\").REVIEWS“For the most part, this disc of music by Carulli contains solo pieces, played with tremendous verve and panache by Chilean guitarist Carlos Pérez. His playing has a spontaneous, uninhibited feel that grab the attention…Pérez has a complete command of the instrument, and the dramatic sense necessary to make this type of music achieve its effect.”Classical ...
