Animated; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English With its pretty songs and good characters, THUMBELINA will delight children. The film--which uses more computer graphics than previous Don Bluth films--tells the fable of the Hans Christian Andersen heroine Thumbelina (Jodi Benson), a tiny girl born to a childless woman from a flower. Longing to find someone her size, she falls in love with a fairy prince, Cornelius (Gary Imhoff), only to be kidnapped by a band of show business toads and their singing Ma (Charo). That's just the beginning of Thumbelina's adventures and her quest to be reunited with her prince--and it's an adventure filled with danger and excitement.
Thumbelina Reviews: "...Freewheeling cinematic adaptation....Thoroughly engaging....Benson makes an ideal Thumbelina..."
-- Stephen Holden, New York Times "...THUMBELINA casts its spell so effectively that you don't even have to be a child to be swept away to its magical never-never land....It is a work of lilting pace and charm..."

| | Troll In Central Park DVD (1994)
Thumbelina film
$7.05 Nastiness reigns in Troll Land, where the kindly nonconformist Stanley (Dom DeLuise) is willing to risk his life to grow a forbidden garden. Soon Stanley is banished to New York City by the evil Queen Gnorga (Cloris Leachman), since there, Gnorga believes, nothing ever grows. However, Stanley ends up in lush, green Central Park, where he meets Gus (Phillip Glasser) and his baby sister, Rosie (Tawny Sunshine Glover), who have gone off on their own adventure. The three friends soon find themselves battling the vengeful Gnorga, who plans to devastate the park. This sweet, pastel-pretty tale is animated in rainbow hues, and the characters are appealingly drawn. Directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, this lighthearted story is geared toward young children.

| | Riding Giants DVD (2004) Widescreen; Special Edition; Subtitled
Thumbelina review
$15.19 Giving a history of surfing that stretches from the early 1940s to 2004, RIDING GIANTS is director Stacy Peralta's examination of surfing as a lifestyle, a risk-taker's delight, and a space for increasing innovation and modernization. From the California coastline to the dramatic wild waters of Hawaii, big waves are the aim of some of the top surfers in the sport--Greg Noll, Jeff Clark, and Laird Hamilton. Beginning with old footage of the first surf boards which were long and heavy and made for riding small waves without much movement, and taking viewers through the sport chapter by chapter, this comprehensive documentary shows how the faces of the sport change with advances in surfboard technology. Bit by bit boards become smaller and "beach bums" are more readily accepted by society. The film offers a comic look at cult films like GIDGET and the music of surf guitarist Dick Dale--pop culture influences responsible for introducing the sport and its lifestyle to the mainstream. The most fascinating moments of the film come in its final quarter when Hamilton and his buddies discover the key to tow-in big-wave surfing and break through all imaginable boundaries. RIDING GIANTS shows some true daredevils doing what they do best, and its magnificent photography, comprehensive interviews, and insider perspective ...
| | Goodbye Dragon Inn DVD (2004) Widescreen; Subtitled
Thumbelina DVD
$14.99 The subject of cinema, of the mix of loneliness and connection that is part of being in a movie audience, is the concern of this sad, beautiful, minimalist composition by Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-Liang (WHAT TIME IS IT THERE?). The action takes place Inside a Taipei movie theater operated by a lonely clubfooted woman (Shiyang Chi-Chen) whose slow steps echo through the empty corridors and aisles, as if measuring out the feet of celluloid that make up the film itself. When a character actually speaks, the film is half over, and his exclamation that the theater is "haunted" echoes uneasily through the rest of the film, causing one to wonder just who is a ghost and who isn't. A lonely visitor to the theater (Kiyonobu Mitamura) acts pretty real. But then there are characters who seem to come out of nowhere to sit next to him and bother him with their loud eating. The film on the theater screen is the 1966 King Hu martial arts classic, DRAGON INN, and one of that film's original actors is even in the theater, with his grandson. While not a lot seems to happen, Tsai's film is never dull thanks to the playful sense of sound and stunning cinematography. In chronicling the impermanence of life, and of film itself, this film becomes post-modern as well as beautiful, and---rare for an art film of this sort--accessible and engaging even to the casual movie lover.
