One of the most famous and influential albums ever recorded, SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND had a huge impact on the music world, signaling the beginning of a new era of sophistication and maturity in rock. The musical experimentation was dynamic and fresh, several tracks were edited to create seamless transitions, and even the visual design was more elaborate than anything previously attempted.
Producer George Martin and The Beatles searched for new sounds and studio effects. They added crowd sounds and animal cries from sound-effects recordings, sped up Paul McCartney's vocals in "When I'm Sixty-Four" (to make him sound younger), and sustained a single piano chord for 40 seconds to end "A Day In The Life." The orchestrations, scored by Martin, were hailed by critics as bridging the gap between pop and classical music, and many people who had never bought a rock record bought SGT. PEPPER'S.

Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Music Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Japanese edition surpasses all others For all of you who are reeling from the latest Capitol butcheries of the Beatles, take refuge in and heart from this Japanese issue of Sgt. Pepper. It far surpasses its American and European counterparts in sound quality. Indeed, it was a sonic miracle for so early a CD. Yes, I would love to see an updating of this 1987 version--with the addition of the mono mixes (some of which, like the heavily-phased "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," are far superior to the stereo). But this will keep you semi-content in the miserable meantime while we wait. As well as you think you know this masterpiece, the Toshiba edition will bring new delights and surprises. So fork over the extra loot for this import and hunker down until next year when Sgt. Pepper turns 40--and the remaining Beatles throw the party this rock and roll milestone deserves. Import versus domestic? One of a handful of greatest records of all time, and without a doubt one of my all-time favorites. I have both the Japanese Toshiba remastered version, as well as the domestic release and quite frankly, I am unable to discern any difference. Hey, maybe I need a doctor to administer a hearing test, but at this time I have to wonder what the fuss is all about. Submitted by Terry (Hamilton, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
