Edda Moser, John Macurdy, Jose van Dam, Kenneth Riegel, Kiri Te Kanawa, Ruggero Raimondi - Director: Joseph Losey Set in Seville in the 1600's, young nobleman Don Giovanni is a well-known philanderer with a long list of amorous conquests. After he attempts to seduce the beautiful Donna Anna, her father's battle to protect her ends in tragedy. A film version of Mozart's greatest opera, directed by Joseph Losey (The Servant), with music direction by Lorin Maazel. Mozart's celebrated opera is given lush cinematic treatment in this production by director Joseph Losey (THE SERVANT), with a score performed by the Paris Opera under the direction of Lorin Maazel. In 1600s Seville, Don Giovanni (Ruggero Raimondi, in a sinister performance) is the owner of a glass factory and a rampant womanizer who kills the father of Donna Anna (Edda Moser), an engaged woman whom he attempted to seduce. Anna and her fiance Ottavio vow revenge. The dead man's ghost later appears to Giovanni and offers the wealthy playboy the choice of changing his ways or facing the fires of Hell. Losey's film is regarded to be one of the finest opera films ever made. Shot in Color and Panavision.
Additional credits: Rolf Liebermann (cinematic conception); Frantz Salieri (adaptation); Michele Neny (sound); Marthe Mikon (costumes); and Janine Reiss (musical advisor and harpsichordist).
Additional performers: John Macurdy (The Commander); Edda Moser (Donna Anna); Kenneth Riegel (Don Ottavio); Malcolm King (Masetto); and Eric Adjani (Valet in Black).

Don Giovanni Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) How to film opera If ever an opera needed to be presented as a movie, Don Giovanni is it. On stage the movement of people onto stage to sing their bit and then off again is almost always awkward. Not so in Losey's masterpiece. The singers are first rate -- Van Dam as Leporello! What an extravagance! The settings and costumes are magnificent. This is The dvd of Don Giovanni to own. Submitted by Thomas (Mandurang, Vic, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Maazel's "Don Giovanni" on DVD Experts do not agree, and while William Berger, in his 2002 NPR Guide, "Opera", speaks of Raimondi in the title role as 'both fiendish and elegant while "stalked" by a ravishing Kiri te Kanawa', the 1991 French "Guide des opéras de Mozart", ed. Brigitte Massin, finds Raimondi to be 'often defective with variable intonation', Ottavio quite ordinary - and finally only the Leporello of van Dam to be noteworthy.
This reviewer, of no particular skill it's true, takes a very different tack with respect to Ottavio. Once upon a time, wishing to purchase a CD of 'Don Giovanni', and being able to avail myself of professional advice at the time, I neverthe-
less - for the only and only time in a life of CD purchases - returned the recommended CD in exchange for this, the Maazel, version on account of the perceived non-silky quqlity of the voice of the 'other' Ottavio. And just why should Ottavio have the rare(?) silky timbre Riegel supplies? Something I feel is needed in his, the 'beau rôle' of the work, a voice that should plane above all others, ethereally...
The genial idea of having chosen a masterwork of Palladio, the 'Rotunda' in the Vicenza region, as a backdrop for the film is beyond all praise. Submitted by a reviewer (Cornwall, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Finally on DVD! The wonderful production under Lorin Maazel and the stellar cast: Ruggiero Raimondi, Jose van Dam, Kiri Te Kanawa, Tereza Berganza etc. make this Mozart masterpiece a wonderful and unforgettable experience for every opera lover. $12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.
