After a bloody double-cross leaves him for dead, professional hit man Jeff (Charles Bronson) tracks the shooter and his beautiful mistress (Jill Ireland) to New Orleans. But when Jeff takes both revenge and the woman, he finds himself blackmailed by a powerful crime boss (Telly Savalas) who wants the fiercely independent gunman to join his organization. Jeff refuses, and is hunted through an unforgiving city where love is like a loaded gun and debts of vengeance are paid in bullets. Charles Bronson is the lone-wolf hitman, Jeff, determined not to join THE FAMILY in this violent crime drama. After getting out of jail in the Antilles, Jeff returns to New Orleans and his beautiful girlfriend Vanessa (Jill Ireland). The sharpshooting killer soon becomes embroiled in trouble, however, when Weber (Telly Savalas), the head of an organized crime family, pressures Jeff into coming back into the fold. Weber has a bombshell surprise for Jeff--Vanessa is now his mob trophy wife. When Jeff discovers his girlfriend has double-crossed him, he gets angry. VERY angry. And now the mob has become a target, because a certain hit man is out for bloody revenge. Bronson and Ireland, married in real life, stir up just the right amount of heat as a pair of lovers who define the ultimate love/hate relationship. THE FAMILY was originally titled, CITTA VIOLENTA (Violent City) referring to New Orleans, where the killing and bloodshed in the movie takes place. The film was an Italian production directed by Sergio Sollima and one of the contributing screenwriters was another Italian director, Lina Wertmuller. Savalas's brother, George, who would also star with him on KOJAK, costars in the movie. Unfortunately for the both of them, Wagner was framed for murder by wealthy Harris Wagner (John Huston), who has the financial resources to make the escape very difficult for the both of them. Riding high on the success of the previous year's DEATH WISH, Bronson picked this as his follow-up. Director Tom Gries also directed Bronson the same year in BREAKHEART PASS.

Harvey Pekar, the hilariously downtrodden Cleveland comic book artist, is the subject of AMERICAN SPLENDOR, titled after Pekar's autobiographical series. Played by actor Paul Giamatti, Pekar also appears as himself, giving the film a documentary feeling with many behind-the-scenes on-set shots. Directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini maintain this balance between the actors and the real-life characters--Pekar's wife Joyce and coworker Toby also appear on set as themselves--while crafting a funny, difficult, heartwarming tale that encapsulates Pekar's life, work, and uniquely bizarre perspectives.
