Griffith's first album, recorded live, without overdubs, and originally released on a tiny independent label in '78, shows an artist already fully formed; in fact, her folk and country influences are just about evenly displayed. Her plaintive, girlish voice takes a bit of getting used to, but it's used to good effect here, and the all-acoustic instrumentation provides a perfect backdrop. Highlights include the cowboy love song "Alabama Soft Spoken Blues" (which has particularly lovely background vocals), and the title song, a poignant memoir of a childhood friend.

There's A Light Beyond These Woods CD music
$14.65 THERE'S A LIGHT BEYOND THESE WOODS, Nanci Griffith's debut album, was essentially an early example of DIY--recorded live, without overdubs. This sophomore effort marked her first foray into a real studio, and although she's got a drummer with her this time (LIGHT was all acoustic), the musical format is much the same, with a more or less equal balance struck between her folk and country roots. Several of the songs deal in varying degrees of nostalgia, a longing addressed directly in "You Can't Go Home Again," and rather more obliquely in a cover of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtownl" Other highlights include the neo-bluegrass "Wheels" and the faux cowboy ...

American Flyer has long been a favorite of singer/songwriter, L.A. country-rock, and '70s soft rock aficionados, partially because of the group's supergroup status, but chiefly because the music they made was very, very good. That pedigree was indeed impressive, with the four members consisting of former Pure Prairie League member Craig Fuller, Eric Kaz of the Blues Magoos, Doug Yule of the Velvet Underground, and Steve Katz, formerly of Blood, Sweat & Tears -- maybe not Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in terms of marquee name recognition, but surely a collection of gifted and respected singer/songwriters ...
