Fans of the Temptations' latter-day work should be more than pleased at the re-release, with the inclusion of a bonus cut, of FOR LOVERS ONLY. Recorded in 1995, the album may feature only one original Temptation (Otis Williams) as Melvin Franklin had recently departed, but its nevertheless a sterling example of the power of modern soul music. Most of the songs featured here hail from the Great American Songbook. This wasn't the first time the group had tackled standards, but the contemporary arrangements the tunes receive here are as startling as they are successful. It's a safe bet that Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne never would have imagined their classic "Time After Time" beginning with the spoken exhortation "drop the groove," but drop it they do, with the considerable assistance of studio mastermind Isaias Gamboa. The group's soulful harmonies and obvious emotional committment to the material should be studied by younger bands intent on breaking into the R&B game. Listen and learn, kids.

When I heard The Temptations sing Night & Day I cried, it bought back soo many memories of my youth. I am a huge fan of Cole Porter & his incredible music. I liked this cd a lot but i did'nt like the arrangements of some of the songs, they ended up great. I would rfeccomend this CD to people who loved the blues, jazz & easy listening.....& the movies the songs came from......I'm glad i purchased this album for my vast collection of music. David English aka "Melvin Franklin" goes out strong... Not mentioned in this beautiful compilation's discriptive was that Melvin Franklin did record "Life Is But A Dream." The motherload of the bass vocals was more than adequately covered by Ray Davis, formerly of Parliment/Funkadelic ("Tear the Roof Mutha...") Mr. Davis has since past away as well. Never-the-less, this album is right up there with their best work - and that says it all!!! Submitted by ruela14 (Washington, DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
If Your Not In Love When You Listen To This CD, You Will Be. This CD is speechless. I cannot even find the words to describe it because it is that good. I have purchased this CD six different times. I have given them away as gifts, and loaned a few out and did not get them back. This CD is another CD that did not get it's just do. I feel that it should be put back out there and it really should win a Grammy. The Temptations do a wonderful job. I have never heard these songs sung the way they sing them. When I first heard this CD, I told a friend that one could fall in love with Godzilla just by listening to this music. If I could rate this CD 20 stars I would. Great work TEMPTATIONS!!! $16.45 TAKE OUR TWO-POINT QUIZ: HOW TO KNOW IF THIS CD IS FOR YOU1) You love an upbeat, globally-influenced blues-rock sound served up with a clever turn of phase. 2) Not to mention cool Knopfler-esque guitar licks, a rock-solid backbeat and the husky thump of an upright bass. Oh yeah? Then it's time for you to "get lost" with the Bean Hoy band.THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSICIt's really all about the songs - sly slices of life written by all four band members. Bandleader Mike Starling's bluesy reggae tune 'Oh! Sandfly!,' for example, is a humorous narrative of his experience dealing with an insidious insect while on a backpacking trip in New Zealand. Guitarist Tom Plutshack weaves images of modern-day wage slavery and Egyptian mythology into the haunting grooves of "Pyramid Stones." And drummer Bob Mueller's Latin surf-blues 'El Chupacabra' relates the legend of a blood-sucking beast rumored to be terrorizing South America. These kind of pop culture references and wry observations of world affairs are sprinkled liberally throughout the band's lyrics. 'Bob and I met in college, where we were both mass media majors,' Starling explains. 'When you look at the lyrics we've come up with over the years, it's obvious that the journalist's peculiar way of looking at the world has influenced our songwriting more than we would have ever guessed. 'A PERFECT THIRDThe third Bean Hoy CD, "Get Lost" expands on the lyrically and musically playful format that Starling established on the group's first two releases, "Boys Can't Be Trusted" (1998) and "Cool Music for a Big Dumb World" (2006). Along with "Sandfly," the new disc includes three more new Starling originals ('Swing Your Hips,' 'Shitty Job,' and 'Crazy') and a couple of droll ditties from bassist Jared Drake's days with the Cottage Boys band ('The Planets,' 'Daddy Long Legs'). Rounding out the set is 'California's Gonna Sink,' a tongue-in-cheek earthquake anthem that Mueller and Starling originally wrote to land a gig for their first band, Your Missing Socks, back in 1984. Then as now, they express more amusement than annoyance with all the foibles of this big dumb world. ...
