This Canadian singer has a pop-rock style reminiscent of Sheryl Crow, with a dash of Melissa Etheridge's growl. Her earlier influences range from folk-popper James Taylor (evident on "Trust Me [This Is Love]") to her countryman Bryan Adams ("Sitting On Top Of The World"). As in Crow's songs, characters from all walks of life populate Marshall's songs, whether it's the Southern homemaker escaping her alcoholic spouse in "Birmingham" or the lost soul looking for salvation in "Last Exit To Eden." Only 10 songs long, AMANDA MARSHALL is a tasty appetizer for what promises to be a delectable body of work.

Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. Jay Records' 1995 studio cast recording of Guys and Dolls was a significant contribution to theater music, presenting on two CDs the most complete presentation of the show ever committed to disc. Since then, however, the label has cheapened its work by licensing a "highlights" album drawn from the recording, and now it further muddies the waters with another shortened -- and this time revised -- version. This single-disc, hour-long album features half a dozen newly recorded tracks that serve to replace two of the 1995 cast's principals, Gregg Edelman, who played Sky Masterson, and Tim Flavin, who played Nathan Detroit. In their places are Ron Raines and Graham Bickley. No explanation is offered for the substitutions, though the CD booklet contains advertisements for solo albums on Jay by the two new cast members. Tim Flavin, who never managed a believable American accent, is not missed, especially since Bickley, in the limited amount of time he gets, proves a noticeable improvement. But Edelman's performance was one of the best things about the 1995 recording, and the deep-voiced, somewhat gruff Raines is much less impressive, especially because he inspires Emily Loesser, as Sarah Brown, to overact in their songs together, "I'll Know," "If I Were ...

After four years of silence, Marisa Monte reappeared with two simultaneously released albums, Universo ao Meu Redor and Infinito Particular. On Universo ao Meu Redor, Monte thoroughly explores, and in her own way interprets, the sound of Brazil's most famous music style, samba. This was a much anticipated project, as Monte's few earlier samba recordings turned out splendid. And Universo ao Meu Redor doesn't in any way leave the listener disappointed.
