Irving Mills, Vol. 1 album
$12.09 Jan Garber is most famous for leading a popular dance band in the 1930s and '40s, one that was originally inspired by Guy Lombardo and featured shaking saxophones and rather sickly sweet music that sounds laughably dated today. However, before he turned mostly toward schlock, Jan Garber had a surprisingly viable jazz/dance band in the 1920s. This CD from the collectors' TOM (The Old Masters) label mostly dates from 1926-29, and it is filled with cheerful and swinging ensembles, along with some ...

| | Red McKenzie Volume 1 CD (2001)
Irving Mills, Vol. 1 music CDs
$12.09 In 1924 Red McKenzie (a former jockey and bellhop) formed an unusual novelty trio, the Mound City Blue Blowers, consisting of him playing a comb (covered in tissue or wax paper), Dick Slevin on kazoo, and banjoist Jack Bland. Their first recording, "Arkansas Blues," was a major hit, which was a major surprise to everyone involved. The Mound City Blue Blowers recorded 20 numbers during 1924-1925 (some on a different label as McKenzie's Candy Kids), adding guitarist Eddie Lang to the group by the seventh song. All of these formerly rare recordings are on this CD, along with two numbers from 1927 (with Joe Humby on guitar instead of Lang). ...

Irving Mills, Vol. 1 songs
$12.09 All of Red McKenzie's early recordings have been made available on two Sensation CDs. The second volume starts off with four numbers from 1927-1928 by McKenzie's Music Box, which teams the singer and his comb (which sounds like a kazoo) with violinist Joe Venuti, guitarist Eddie Lang, and (on two of the songs) banjoist Eddie Condon. McKenzie is featured on five sessions with his Mound City Blue Blowers from 1929-1931, mostly all-star groups with the likes of Gene Krupa, Jack Teagarden (who is showcased on two numbers), Pops Foster, Benny Goodman, Bud Freeman, Fats Waller, Muggsy Spanier, ...
