| | Nana Mouskouri Gold CD (2006) Import
20 Golden Greats album
$20.95 This is the definitive American collection of music by Nana Mouskouri, the Greek singer who became a chanteuse of world music and especially French pop. Form the earliest tracks like "Ave Maria" and her gorgeous reading of Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair," to Georges Bizet's "Habanera" and even Edwin Hawkins' "Oh Happy Day!" All of these appear on the first disc, but it's on disc two where the collection gets moving with her readings of "The Rose," "Prelude un Enfant," and, of course, Michel LeGrand's "Quand on S'Aime." Gold is simply high quality in 24-bit remastered sound from beginning to end. ...
| | Flying Saucers Rock 'N' Roll: The Very Best Of Sleepy Labeef CD (1999)
20 Golden Greats CD music
$10.69 Sleepy LaBeef did not record for Sun Records in the '50s, but his reputation as a rockabilly artist might mislead a few buyers into thinking Flying Saucers Rock 'n' Roll is a collection of '50s rockabilly recordings. ...

| | George Jones Gospel Collection CDs (2003)
20 Golden Greats songs
$9.59 Although country icon George Jones had made gospel albums before this 2003 recording, both solo and with duet partner Tammy Wynette, this one bears a special significance. The two-disc set of spirituals marks the first time he'd tackled such material since an almost-fatal 1999 car accident. The mishap is said to have put him on spiritual notice, so to speak, and inspired this album (though he'd done some secular work in between). The arrangements, quite appropriately, steer clear of the customary gospel trappings and are squarely in the Billy Sherrill/classic Nashvile mold that suits Jones so well. The man's voice remains a marvel of tone and emotion, and hearing him lay into the likes of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms," and even the ubiquitous "Amazing Grace" ...

| | Darryl Worley CD (2004)
20 Golden Greats CD music
$12.65 Following up the success of his patriotic 2003 outing, HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN?, Darryl Worley turns the rhetoric down a bit with a self-titled follow-up that cleaves more to the traditional country-music topics of fidelity, putting in an honest day's work, and living a good life. Producer Frank Rogers helps Worley to cobble together the kind of honky-tonk-flavored fare that seems to be a rarity on the country airwaves in the early 2000s.
The opening cut, "Awful Beautiful Life," sets the tempo immediately with a strong kick drum and a crackling guitar riff that pops up throughout, bringing to mind the late Waylon Jennings. From here, the Georgia native serves up the Merle Haggard-like tearjerker "If I Could Tell the Truth," the New Orleans-flavored shuffle ""Work and Worry," with its combination of rollicking piano and crying fiddle, and the murder ballad "If It Hadn't Been for Love." Worley does keep to his patriotic reputation via the ominous "Wake Up America," a stark song about the drug scourge of crystal meth and crack cocaine that ...
| | Demon Hunter Storm The Gates Of Hell CD (2007) With DVD; Special Edition
20 Golden Greats music CDs
$16.99 God-fearing metalheads Demon Hunter make a racket that would surely be labeled evil by anyone not listening closely; they appear to be influenced by such practitioners of darkness as Slayer and Pantera. Perhaps the only indication of the band's alliance with the powers of good is a marked ear for melody, showing up amidst the otherwise muscular, heavy, metal-core mayhem.
Demon Hunter sparingly employs more traditional vocals and moody textures throughout the roaring, rapid firestorm of the songs. "Lead ...
