For part two of Michael Musillami's series of Playscape recordings, the guitarist's quintet becomes a sextet with the addition of trumpeter Randy Brecker. Pianist Kent Hewitt, drummer Steve Johns, and the late altoist Thomas Chapin all remain, while bassist Nat Reeves is replaced by Ray Drummond. The addition of trumpet allows Musillami to create arrangements of greater depth and complexity, most notably on the quick 3/4 tune "Shoeshine," which stretches to nearly 12 minutes. This remarkable piece begins with Musillami playing deft, swinging lines, backed only by Johns on brushes. Drummond then enters to set up a vamp, which introduces a marvelously intricate three-part melody involving Brecker on muted trumpet, Chapin on flute, and Musillami on guitar. From an orchestrational standpoint, this is a good deal more advanced than what one hears on Musillami's previous outing, Archives. There are similar nuances on the opening track, "GlassArt," where Musillami deploys the three melody instruments in such a way as to simulate sectional writing. "Cousin Jim" also finds Musillami reaching new heights of originality and surprise. Beginning as a ballad, the tune abruptly switches to a brisk 6/8 tempo and remains there throughout. It's a simple idea -- the best usually are -- yet one that elevates the piece quite far above the ordinary. The theme, lyrical and yet staggeringly complex, is undoubtedly some of Musillami's finest writing to date. The other tunes feature great playing but don't quite rise to the same level as compositions. There's the breezy Latin piece "Mar's Bars"; a fast modal tune called "Out of Balance," which features an especially hot Brecker solo; "The Haberdasher Blues," a quirky 12-bar tune with cooking solos by Musillami and Chapin; an affecting ballad titled "I Wait for the Summertime"; and the up-tempo finale "Grey Cypress," with Chapin and Musillami darting through the changes ferociously. Brecker is absent from quite a few of the tracks, but Chapin's alto and flute work is ever-present and characteristically superb. The rhythm section is in top form, with Kent Hewitt contributing a number of fine solos (especially on "Cousin Jim"), and Drummond and Johns driving the whole band expertly. Mar's Bars doesn't sustain the kind of interest generated by its three best tracks but, on the whole, the album represents a big creative step forward for Michael Musillami. ~ David R. Adler

Guitarist Michael Musillami has a fuzztone/rock approach which might lead one to expect a more pop or fusion date than they get on GlassArt. It's a pleasure to hear aggressive, hard-hitting material rather than overproduced mood music. Musillami's riffs, fills, and phrases are edgy and frequently enticing, with a solid bluesy sensibility and drive. Randy Brecker's trumpet, especially his muted passages, are lyrical yet full and inviting, while Thomas Chapin is a bit more subdued than usual on flute and alto sax but fits the context well. This has a contemporary production style and design but a timeless quality and energy. ~ Ron Wynn

Although the veteran composer/guitarist's website could use a major update -- it is contemporary to 1998 -- he's right in the pocket of modern smooth jazz with his 2005 release. He comes with a solid pedigree in the genre, having recorded a duet with George Benson (who also once covered "Keep Rollin'," given a trippy-moody makeover here), and working with Rick Braun, Marcus Johnson and Gabriela Anders. But his all-star associations aren't as important as his facility for melody and groove, and he does well on both counts here, beginning with the bright, vibrant Norman Brown-like title track, playing it snappy ...

This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. With a sweet, plaintive voice that slides easily into a soft falsetto, and a laconic way with the piano, young Matt Hales (AKA Aqualung) makes moping sound sexy. STRANGE & BEAUTIFUL--a compilation of tracks from Aqualung's first two UK albums--evokes a somber, ...
Landmark
Mika Pohjola Landmark CD  (2002)

Glass Art CD music
CD $17.69
This remarkable disc features Mika Pohjola's crafty "MikaSonik" ensemble, with Miguel Zenon on alto sax and flute, Ben Monder on guitar, Fernando Huergo on bass, and Roberto Dani on drums, with Johanna Grüssner contributing haunting vocals on occasion. Pohjola plays Fender Rhodes and other electric keys in addition to acoustic piano; on "Landmark" and "Retrospectives" he doubles certain melodies on harpsichord, as he has done on two previous albums (he may well be the first musician to employ the arcane instrument in a modern jazz ensemble, although Herbie Hancock played an electric harpsichord on a couple of unissued Miles Davis tracks in the late 60s.) Compositionally, Pohjola's work is involved yet infectious and profoundly melodic, driven by the virtuosity and strong personalities of his players. On tracks like "Screen Play" and "Future Apparent" the band purveys a hip, appealing species of electric jazz; the fluid melodies and richly layered sounds are somewhat reminiscent of Kurt Rosenwinkel's The Enemies of Energy. Pohjola's mellower side comes through on "A Ballad About Something" and "Old Couples Lullaby." In contrast, he makes loud mischief on the rhythmically skewered punk of "Young in the 80s" and conveys a peculiar, semi-rubato feel on the evocative "Summer Garden" (which features Monder ...
