Camouflage album
$14.19 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Chris Botti In Boston CDs (2009) With DVD
Camouflage music CDs
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.

| | Vijay Iyer Historicity CD (2010) Digipak
Camouflage songs
$14.15 Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. There's no other single player who sounds even remotely like him, few who can match his inventive and whimsical sense of play or seriousness, and absolutely nobody who presents the stunning, highly intelligent music he dishes out. With HISTORICTY, he touches on many different levels of acumen, influenced by contemporary alternative rock, Motown, show tunes, pop fusion, the early creative music of the '70s, and ethnic ...
| | George Winston Autumn CD (1980) Windham Hill 20th Anniversary Edition
Camouflage album
$8.89 Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston.
AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano soloists: an insistent--occasionally even jarring--gothic sensibility that informs his music.
Like many of his albums, AUTUMN found its inspiration in the seasonal changes wrought upon the Montana landscape that Winston calls home. Though it might be easy to pigeonhole a composition like "Woods" as easy listening, a more careful examination reveals a darker--daresay even sinister--underside, one more informed by Birnam Wood than by Hundred Acre Wood. "Stars" may bring forth images of cloud-free starlit skies, but its stirring emotionalism yearns for something more, making it difficult ...
| | Very Best Of Julie London CDs (2006)
Camouflage CD music
$19.35 This two-disc set, generous at 50 tracks, is probably the most comprehensive Julie London anthology available. While certainly no match for her more technically accomplished contemporaries, London was a fine, appealing singer who used her cool, understated alto to excellent advantage.
London is best known for her signature song "Cry Me a River," and that's here, of course, but her sultry take on standards like "When I Fall in Love," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," and "Body and Soul" are nothing to scoff at. While some of her later recordings can suffer from excessive orchestration, London's vocal stylings are always on point, as the wealth of material on this EMI collection proves.
Digitally remastered double CD anthology of 50 great recordings by one of the most understated, underrated song stylists of the ...
