"Deep Spring" is actually an album and a half (over 72 minutes) comprised of the 19 songs I like best of all the ones that I wrote during 2004. Many of the songs were inspired by Bob Glusic's awesome wilderness video footage (see note* below) and four of them serve as sound tracks for his latest high definition DVD, "Hawaii". The music was all created, sequenced, mixed, and then recorded by an internal sampling process on a Yamaha Motif ES8 music production synthesizer. There is a great deal of meaning for me wrapped up in this CD. The frogs you hear around the edges are the very frogs who sang at night at Valley View Farm, the place where I was living while I was composing the music for the CD. My original idea was to have the cover artwork for the CD be the mandala of twelve frogs I painted in March, 2000. (You will see a couple of those frogs as part of the design on the CD disk itself.) I called the mandala "Leap of Faith" and only recently realized that I was inspired to create the painting right after Barry Brailsford, a storyteller extraordinaire from New Zealand, who was speaking at the CWG center in Ashland handed me a piece of greenstone or Pounamu. This little bit of rock went alive on me and pulsed powerfully with the invitation, "Come to New Zealand, come to New Zealand!" It became my constant companion. I held it in my hand while I slept at night and carried it around in my pocket during the day. I KNEW I urgently needed to visit New Zealand. After three days it disappeared. POOF! It wasn't like I lost it, it simply disappeared. I emailed Barry and told him what happened and he said, "yes, they sometimes do that" and sent me another piece. This time, when I held this second piece in my hand, instead of feeling the strong invitational energy I experienced the first time, I felt a strong sense of being put off, and said to myself, "Well, it doesn't look like I'm going to be going right away."My "Leap of Faith" painting was created right after this experience. The design consists of three frogs fully committed to leaping out from the lily pad center into the dark blue of the unknown, three that are taking off, three who are preparing to jump and three that are sitting, meditating and contemplating the water lilies in the center. The insight that came to me while I was painting was that sometimes when everything within us is screaming to "Do something! Do something" the leap of faith can be to do nothing, action-wise, but to sit and meditate instead. The four and a half years I spent visioning and looking forward to my trip paid off big time. All my dreams came true in very magical ways. So, to me, one meaning of "deep spring"is about taking that leap of faith into the unknown in either the outer or inner world.The process of creating "Deep Spring", the title song, was a major turning point for me in how I was composing music. Rather than composing a piano piece and adding other instruments, with this song, I started composing using the other instruments and letting them each sing their parts, coming in and going out as they wanted to. I completed just about half of the song, "Deep Spring", and felt called to stop, but knew there was more coming. Several days later the middle section where the strings swell up and over just suddenly emerged with all this incredibly beautiful, heart-opening energy that had me in tears while I was composing it.
