With a further change in musical direction the fourth Twins' album feature instrumental tracks and, had the term not fallen into such disrepute, Victorialand could be one of the first 'chill-out' albums. The original is still the greatest.
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). Additional personnel: Richard Thomas (saxophone, tablas). With Raymonde taking a break to work on the second This Mortal Coil album, Fraser and Guthrie made up the Cocteaus for the first full-length follow-up to Treasure. Rather than trying for a full-band approach, Fraser and Guthrie instead created a much more simply beautiful effort, with a relaxed air to it. Rhythms are subtler, with bass and drum machine often totally eschewed in favor of Guthrie's delicate guitar filigrees and lush, produced textures. Fraser is, as always, in wonderfully fine voice; her words are quite indecipherable, but the feelings are no less strong for it. "Lazy Calm" starts things perfectly, as deep, heavily-treated guitar strums combine with a heavy flange and guest saxophone from Dif Juz member Richard Thomas. Other songs sparkle with a lovely vivaciousness. Far from being stereotypical arty music to sit around and be gloomy to, two pieces especially shine with a gentle energy: "Fluffy Tufts," with its many-layered ringing strings and Fraser's overdubbed vocals; and the joyful "Little Spacey," with a soft rhythm underlying more sheer electric loveliness. Guthrie adds heavy reverb and overdubbed lines to create the Cocteaus' wash on such songs as "Throughout the Dark Months of April and May" and "Feet Like Fins," the latter again featuring Thomas, this time on tablas. For all the sweet beauty of Victorialand, things end on a quietly dramatic note, but a dramatic one nonetheless. "The Thinner the Air" starts with treated piano and rather spooky guitar leads -- the mysterious soloing is especially wonderful -- while Fraser then sings with a slightly haunted feeling, concluding with slightly nervous wails. It's an unexpected but effective touch for this fine record. ~ Ned Raggett In the two years following TREASURE, the Cocteau Twins released three EPs: AIKEA-GUINEA, TINY DYNAMINE, and ECHOES IN A SHALLOW BAY. Each of these records saw the band moving progressively further away from the heavier sound of previous releases. VICTORIALAND (1986) was the apex of this trend and easily their most ethereal, airy album. Interested listeners should also check out the band's 1986 THE MOON AND THE MELODIES, recorded with ambient musician Harold Budd. VICTORIALAND features very little in the way of percussion on most tracks, instead concentrating on the interplay between Elizabeth Fraser's vocals and Robin Guthrie's elaborate, but unassuming, guitar effects. This is most successful on "Oomingmak," where the ambient sounds backing the two smoothly ebb and flow, augmented by Simon Raymonde's intermittent bass notes. Other standouts include "Feet-like Fins," which whirls around Guthrie's gorgeously echoing guitar before adding bass and bongos in a swirling climax, and "The Thinner the Air," a haunting track that suggests a more archaic Dead Can Dance. VICTORIALAND and its predecessor, TREASURE, are consistently cited as the band's best records by their fans.

| Victorialand Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Incrediblania! This album, dear reader, is unlike anything you've ever heard before. The story goes that the 'Twins drummer was off recording elsewhere so the rest of the band decided to do an LP without him... and thank goodness for that! Words like "etheral", "atmospheric" and "onscobodialistic" do not fully describe was appeared at the end of the recording session. You MUST MUST MUST hear this album in the not-too-distant future! Original...incredible. The Cocteau Twins are one of the most original bands that I've ever heard. Back in the 80s I didn't hear music like this by anyone else. It's dreamy chill-out music before the term was even applied to music...I think. The song 'Fluffytufts' really stands out for me, but I love the whole cd. If you like Victorialand, then you'll probably like The Moon And The Melodies on which they collaborated with Harold Budd. Submitted by Spiral_77 (Somewhere in NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

An Extra Pulse of Beauty Absolutly beautiful. In my opinion, the best album Cocteau Twins ever recorded.
I highly recommend this album to anyone. Submitted by sir_run_run_shaw (Southern California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An Elizabeth Fraser/Robin Guthrie Work of Art. Victoriland is certainly one of the most beautiful albums The Cocteau Twins have ever released.
From the soft, dreamy feel of "Lazy Calm", and "Fluffy Tufts" to the more haunting, and introspective emotions of "Throughout The Dark Months of April And May", and "The Thinner The Air", the Twins' full spectrum of song writing and musical ability is well represented here. Elizabeth Fraser's soft, yet powerful vocals contrast nicely with Robin Guthrie's trademark shimmering guitars and wonderful piano work. A must have for the Cocteau collector and a great album to introduce newer Cocteau fans to some of their earlier sounds. Submitted by theXfactor (San Francisco, CA) Was This Review Helpful? $10.15 20 years on it's hard to conceive the impact the Cocteau Twins made with their debut only nine months after Elizabeth Fraser (vocals extraordinaire), Robin Guthrie (guitar) and Will Heggie (bass) first formed the band. With no press exposure and only a handful of live shows (but thanks to an oft repeated John Peel session) the album reached the top 10 in the independent chart where it stayed for the following year. ...

$12.05 MEMORANDUMRE: Louden Swain Gets Down to Business with “Suit and Tie”Please be advised that effective immediately, Louden Swain is bringing it. This threesome of native Midwesterners, who’ve taken their name from Mathew Modine’s character--the quintessential underdog--in the 80s teen wrestling movie “Vision Quest”, are ready for the next rung on the ladder of success. With their new CD Suit and Tie, the group has firmly established themselves as a band that means business.Singer/guitarist Rob Benedict, Bassist Mike Borja, and drummer Stephen Norton met and started making music in the late 90s. As their fan base grew, so did the maturity of their songs and with 2003’s EP Overachiever, the band began to attract attention. The critically acclaimed 5 song EP featured “Only Lyin’” which was placed on MTV’s The Real World and soon after CMJ Magazine named the band one of the Top 50 Unsigned Artists of the year. By 2004, they were filling local clubs with people singing along to their favorites like “Cast Off” and “Prom”. Lead singer Rob Benedict’s acting career also added recognition ...
