2003 4AD reissue of 1984 album remastered by guitarist Robin Guthrie.
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). Recorded at Palladium Studios, Edinburgh, Scotland and Rooster, West London in August and September, 1984. The opening two numbers of Treasure are simply flawless, starting with "Ivo," where gently strummed guitar and low bass support Fraser's singing; then suddenly added, astonishing chimes and steady percussion build up to a jaw-dropping Guthrie guitar solo. Topping that would be hard for anyone, but in "Lorelei," the Twins do it, with an introductory, breathtaking guitar surge leading into one of Fraser's best vocals, compelling in both its heavenly and earthly tones and rolls. Not a word may be understandable, but it isn't necessary, while the music, driven on by a pounding rhythm, is as perfect a justification of digital delay pedals and the like as can be found. As Treasure continues, the accomplished variety is what stands out the most, whether it be the gentle, futuristic-medieval pluckings on "Beatrix," the understated moody washes and Fraser whispers on "Otterley," the upbeat guitar lines of "Aloysius," or the slightly jazzy touches on "Pandora." The concluding number ends the record on the peak with which it began. "Donimo" starts with a mysterious mix of mock choir sounds, ambient echoes and noises, and Fraser's careful singing before finally exploding into one last heavenly wash of powerful sound; Guthrie's guitar, Raymonde's steady bass, and drum machine smashes provide the perfect bed for Fraser's final, exultant vocals. Treasure lives up to its title and then some as a thorough and complete triumph. ~ Ned Raggett With their third album, TREASURE, the Cocteau Twins settled on what would, from then on, be their primary lineup--vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie, and bassist Simon Raymonde. One of the band's most impressionistic records, it abandons the "phrase" titles of previous records in favor of mythological-sounding one word names, encouraging listeners to make up their own interpretations of the songs. Sound-wise, the band's performance, though not confrontational, is more aggressive, and several tracks, such as "Persephone," find Guthrie experimenting with a harsher guitar sound. Completists should note that some versions of the CD contain all four tracks from the band's 1985 EP, AIKEA-GUINEA. Standouts include the two opening tracks, "Ivo" and "Lorelei," both of which sound like very sexy baby food commercials, while the epic "Donimo" opens with choral-style vocals over sustained musical tones augmented by glittering chimes, exploding halfway through with a pounding drumbeat and Guthrie's crystalline, effects-laden guitar. Despite the fact that Guthrie has stated in interviews that he is largely unhappy with the album, it remains a favorite among the band's fans and it is almost certainly their most consistently upbeat record.
Cocteau Twins Treasure Songs Treasure Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Strange but Creative No comparison to Sigur Ros should be given. This sound is one of its own, and is a nice change to anyone who listens. Can't understand what the twins are saying, but thier sweet, melodic voices are peacful. Good but not the best introduction to Cocteau Twins Actually it depends on your point of view. Though still interesting, IMHO "Treasure"-era CT music had begun to lose its "punch". When something is meant to be "otherworldy", I think it should also be strange (i.e. unconventional) and, at times, even scary (i.e. provocative). Like many early fans (1982-1983), I think that when CT music lost this dimension, it lost some of its edge. For newcomers, I strongly recommend that they give it a try with "Head Over Heels" (in particular) or "Lullabies, Vol.1" before "Treasure". Submitted by Anthony, C.A. Simply Fantastic !!!!!! This record was released in 1984, when England had The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cure, Prefab Sprout and Depeche Mode releasing their best works at the same time. Cocteau Twins were icons of this generation. Extremely fanciful, imaginative, creative. Unfortunately, the world media didn't give them the opportunity to show the world their masterpieces. Can there be a more appropriate Title? Pure, intense aural pleasure. This is a significant album from a significant band. CT at their best. I've listened to these songs since they were released and they never diminish. It is timeless music. This remaster is wonderful. Thank you CT. For this, and for the years of your unique genius. You have given me more enjoyment than any other music i've ever listened to. Period. Submitted by noemail (Montclair, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Sigur Ros of the 80es Like martians singing from the now dried up oceans of the red planet. This is not real. Submitted by alexandru costache (bucharest, romania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Methe, Lonnie Methe (piano, organ, vibraphone); Mike Tulis (bass instrument); Michael Krassner (acoustic guitar, piano, tambourine); Chris Deden (drums). Recording information: Omaha, NE. With the 2006 release SKELETON BLUES, Simon Joyner delivers yet another instant classic of singer-songwriter rock. All the hallmarks of the genre are touched upon here: layered guitars that evoke late-period Velvet Underground, hallucinatory narratives a la mid-'60s Dylan, downtrodden rhythms that recall SISTER LOVERS-era Big Star, and the singing-as-last-resort voice of mid-'70s Leonard Cohen. The songs all clock in at no less than five and a half minutes apiece--and some much longer--but the depth of the arrangements, the excellence of the playing, and Joyner's epic poetics all require the room to breathe and keep the listener rapt. For those who've followed Simon Joyner's illustrious career ...
