Soleil album
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect ...

| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Soleil music CDs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's ...

| | Beekeeper Ostrich CD (1998)
Soleil music CDs
$10.15 Led by bassist/vocalist Karla Schickele, Beekeeper shines with their minimalist instrumentation and echoing vocals. After the toned-down yet visceral opening track, "Wait Til Then," Schickele and her brother, Matthew Schickele, harmonize to an almost-operatic effect on "Dead and Drugged." Jan Kotik performs steadily on drums throughout. The trio returns to a subdued pace on "Complete" and "Muscle Car." The band's playful side shines on "Men," which is followed by the soothing "Two Men," with Karla Schickele on the vocal lead. Hints of Ida, who would later recruit Karla, are somewhat evident on the final track of the disc, "Mabel." Beekeeper's strength was the Schickele siblings' eagerness to combine their vocals in a variety of ways. The crashing instruments ...

| | Title of the Show CD (2006) Original Broadway Cast
Soleil music CDs
$15.65 As their submission to the 2004 New York Musical Theatre Festival, songwriter Jeff Bowen and librettist Hunter Bell decided to, as Bowen puts it in the song "An Original Musical," "write a musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical." Naturally, when it came to "Filling Out the Form" (another song), in the bracketed space marked "[title of show]," they titled this show [title of show]. The result displays the writer/performers' affection for and understanding of the form of the musical, as well as their ambitions and uncertainties, all of this expressed in contemporary American slang. (The album contains enough cursing to satisfy a rap star, but does not carry a parental advisory sticker.) There is one song in which the two female performers, Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff, ponder about each other, "What Kind of Girl Is She," a question that seems to be answered by their follow-up duet, "Secondary Characters." The four singers work up their greatest enthusiasm in "Die Vampire, Die!," a song about the various forms of discouragement facing the creative artist, including actual people and also the voices inside the artist's own head. ~ William Ruhlmann
As their submission to the 2004 New York Musical Theatre Festival, songwriter Jeff Bowen and librettist Hunter Bell decided to, as Bowen puts it in the song "An Original Musical," "write a musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical." Naturally, when it came to "Filling Out the Form" (another song), in the bracketed space marked "[title of show]," they titled this show [title of show]. The result is perhaps the most generic possible show, which does little more than display the writer/performers' affection for and understanding of the form of the musical, as well as their ambitions and uncertainties, all of this expressed in foul-mouthed contemporary American slang. Here and there, there are reminiscences about childhood (e.g., "A Way Back to Then"). But for the most part, [title of show] never gets beyond its premise. There are some musicals that seem designed to be enjoyed only by people who enjoy musicals. This may be the first musical designed to be enjoyed only by people who enjoy ...
