NATURAL BORN BOOGIE collects the British blues-rock band Humble Pie's first two albums with rarities and B-sides on two CDs. Tracks include "Stick Shift" and "Take Me Back."
NATURAL BORN BOOGIE is a re-sequenced version of Humble Pie's first two albums, SAFE AS YESTERDAY IS and TOWN AND COUNTRY, neither of which got much exposure in America. Success would come later, with the live album PERFORMANCE--ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE, in 1971.
The two albums were showcases for co-founders Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton, both refugees from teeny-bop bands whose relief at finally being able to play their own way initially masked the fact that their styles--Marriott the rowdy blues rocker, Frampton more introspective, with a penchant for acoustic instruments--were rather less compatible than they realized. As a result, the first album is heavy on Marriott's heavy guitar army approach, whereas the second, as its title suggests, has more of a Frampton-influenced pastoral quality.
NATURAL BORN BOOGIE is an interesting collection of live performances from Humble Pie's original incarnation with Peter Frampton. It was mostly recorded in the studio for the BBC (the exception being a concert version of "I Don't Need No Doctor").
The sound is mono and the recording quality is variable, but overall this is a treat for ...

| | Charlatans U K You Cross My Path CDs (2008) Deluxe Edition; Enhanced CD
Amour C'Est D'L'Ouvrange album
$12.99 On their 10th studio album, 2008's YOU CROSS MY PATH, the Charlatans U.K. present another fine set of keyboard-fueled Britpop. From the opening anthem, "Oh Vanity," to the bittersweet closer, "This Is the End," PATH takes listeners down many of the English band's well-worn roads while still keeping its sound fresh and vibrant, best revealed on "The Misbegotten," a driving, techno-tinged tune that showcases the dance-oriented side of the group. As always, frontman Tim Burgess leads the ensemble with cool rock-star detachment, reinforcing his status as a Britpop luminary, and one who certainly influenced Oasis's Liam Gallagher. Although YOU CROSS MY PATH doesn't quite live up to the band's 1990s heyday, it is easily one of its best 21st-century offerings, and will not disappoint ardent fans.
Why did the Charlatans give away You Cross My Path on the internet? Because they needed a way to announce that they were back, to grab the attention of onetime fans who had long ago stopped paying attention to the group. Not that the Charlatans ever cratered, losing all their listeners, but rather they sank into a pleasant retro groove, emphasizing their fondness for the Stones instead of the modernist dance rhythms that helped bring them into the spotlight early in the '90s. You Cross My Path acts as a corrective as the band revs up the rhythms and takes risks in their production, all without abandoning the classicist structures they've relied upon since their eponymous 1995 record. That album struck a good balance between modern and retro, with the subsequent Tellin' Stories tipping the balance toward retro, and You Cross My Path follows its blueprint, bringing back that blend of contemporary and classic, perhaps even gently favoring the modern as this does emphasize sound over song. The Charlatans hardly abandon the songwriting craft they've steadily honed over the course of a decade -- the songs aren't growers, they're immediate -- but what is compelling is the variety of sounds, how "Oh! Vanity" extrapolates a Booker T. & the MG's groove, how "Missing Beats (Of a Generation)" ...
