Musique Hongroise
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want to arrange it/This world you can change it/If ...

$5.95 Since it was recorded during the '80s, Home for Christmas sounds a bit too slick, especially for fans of her early material, but it's nevertheless a reasonably enjoyable holiday record, thanks to Dolly's irrepressible charm. ~ Thom Owens

| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Musique Hongroise
$10.49 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on "Time to Say Goodbye." His most successful album, the classical crossover follow-up effort Sogno (1999), is likewise well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Céline Dion on "The Prayer." Later albums Cieli di Toscana (2001) and Amore (2006) are also represented with a couple inclusions on The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere. The five new recordings exclusive to Vivere include "La Voce del Silenzio"; "Dare to Live (Vivere)," a duet with Italian pop star Laura Pausini; "A Te," which features Kenny G on saxophone; "Io Ci Sarň," a David Foster co-write that features Lang Lang on piano; and "Bellissime Stelle." While many of songs compiled on Vivere are no doubt ...

Musique Hongroise
$15.75 The second CD from Seis del Solar (Ruben Blades' main backup group in the 1980s) is the band's finest recording to date. Seis del Solar's instrumentation had changed (tenor saxophonist Bobby Franceschini had replaced the synthesizers of Arturo Ortiz) and the group was a bit more jazz-oriented. Guest Michael Mossman makes a few appearances on flügelhorn. Occasional group vocals uplift the music, the rhythm section generally burns, ...
